How To Use Boot Skins

BootSkin is a free program that allows users to change their Windows 2000 and Windows XP boot screens. You will first need to download and install BootSkin before you can use the boot skins featured here on customize.

How to Install a Boot Skin

1. Download the bootskin you want to apply at system startup. (usually contained in a .zip file)

2. Extract the file or directory to the “Skins” folder under the directory where you installed BootSkin.

  • Typically the location would be: C:\Program Files\Stardock\WinCustomize\BootSkin\skins

3. Open BootSkin and select the newly installed bootskin from the list. You can preview the skin here if you’d like.

4. Click Apply.

Quick Troubleshooting Notes

If a bootskin is not displaying correctly during system startup, the following may help.

  • Make sure the two images involved in the skin (the background and the scrolling bar) BOTH have:
    • 16 bit color depth
    • the exact same color palette (as in the exact same 16 colors)
