I've read about all I can find on using an alternate shell instead of the WinXX Explorer shell. The decision has basically come down to Litestep or NextStart. What is everyone's thoughts on these two replacements? Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of? I read about the File Explorer issues with Litestep...are there any other glaring problems?
Finally, I just built a new computer, and was wondering if it was best to install the replacement shell before installing anything else other than WinXX, or if it made any difference whatsoever.
And just for reference to my earlier compatibility question, I'm running WinXP Pro, and plan on installing OfficeXP Pro, and Visual Studio 6 Pro.
If you require any other info about my computer, let me know...Otherwise...
Thanks- JB

why? it is in constant, forward development. every release is a step in the right direction and once you get the hang of it, you're set.
as far as "[installing] the replacement shell before reinstalling anything else," it doesn't make any difference. it might be easier to install it from XP since it's a little more familiar, but it's just as easy from LS.
just go to www.lsdev.org and pick up the latest build.
1. Nextstart is not shell, but shell enhancement. Runs on top of MS explorer. 2. Litestep = Read The Manual (can be hard for some) 3. Nextstart = Easy, but limited compared to LS 4. You can use both, but why? silly... :)
Zathrus, that was probably the most well put statement concerning the two programs. As far as the shake goes...well...personally, I'd go to Dairy Queen. ;)
Thank you mojo for the reply. It looks as though I'm going to give both a shot to see which would suit me best.
I have just one question though. If I use LS, did I just waste my money on the WinXP Pro? I didn't pay but $5 for it anyway (MSCA liscense...ah the perks of being in college), but if I go with LS, will I even use XP?

You'll still get the relative stabillity of XP. I say relative because, compared to 95,98,ME XP is much more stable, provided you have the hardware for it.
