Startbutton

so i'm making a theme in stylebuilder from one of the default window themes because i want to start from scratch.

my problem is, the default themes have a fat windows flag and the word "start" on the button, however, it's not on the image itself.

how do i go about removing this? i can't find it in the properties anywhere.

it's probably just a simple property i can just remove all together but i have no idea what one it is.

any help with this?

thanks.

i did some reading, and apparently it's an icon file in one of the system dll's or something. it said what one but i forgot which i'll have to look again.

also i read that you could put the left margin to a negative number and then the right margin to the same number but not negative, pushing the flag and the text off to the side.

however, this knocks the startbar out of the 'thin' state (20/22pixels). so i can't really do that.

the word "start" is in one of the string tables in explorer.exe (string table 37 to be exact). If you want to remove the text, don't delete everything between the quote on that string table, because it will delete the whole line when you recompile the file. but rather put a space between so the line looks like this: 578, " " (with the space between the quotes. If you want a more detailed version just visit http://www.theeldergeek.com/change_text_on_xp_start_button.h

If you want to skip the registry changes it asks you to make, just save explorer.exe to anywhere other than c:\\windows\\system32 and then use replacer to replace explorer.exe with the one you modified. (original is located in %systemroot%\\system32 just type that in the run box to get to it). replacer can be found at : http://www3.telus.net/_/replacer/ Sorry if my instructions are weird. Good luck :p

One more thing - the start button resizes its width to accommodate the length of text to be displayed on it. so if its too short with 1 space in the string, try more spaces

make the font size like 1, and make it the same color as the taskbar, and you wont be able to see it. thats the easy way.

thanks for the help guys, i'll try split's idea first since it's easier. what i tried to do first is set the font to 0 but doing that makes it a default text size. never thought about changing it to 1.

okay so i found out that the flag picture is a bmp file in explorer.exe. i removed the bmp and now it's gone.

however, there has to be a way to remove it from in stylebuilder, where is the setting that tells it to get the bmp from explorer.exe. there has to be one and it would make it so much easier just to remove it in stylebuilder instead of editing system files.

Freesample i dont think theres an easier way.
Stylebuilder is not for re-editing system files.
So i think you just have to use reedit/reshack and replacer to do it.
