There has once been a day when KOL posted his first "smooth stripes" port here at customize. And there has once been another day for me visiting a store in august 2005 when the new iBooks came out here in germany.
Now it´s march 2006 and i am short before buying a notebook. Imagine you go through your city with all the computer shops and you talk to the resellers about Samsung, Sony and Apple Books.
Vaio FS for 1400 Samsung X60 for 1800?! Vaio FE for 1600 iBook 14" for 1199 Vaio TX2 1800
All of these Notebooks have 1GB of RAM and 100GB Harddrive in the configuration i want them. Now i have to say i will keep my PC for graphics work and making music. What i want is a small notebook with good battery times and enough power to do graphic intense presentations with videos and audio and the usual things like internet, office ...
In the end i talked to a local Apple Store nearby in Munich. He told me he has this one iBook G4 left. With a 14" Display, 1GB RAM and a custom 100GB HDD. For 1199.
Yesterday i read all the news about the new MacBook which will come for the iBook G4. That it will have a much better 13 widescreen display, will be faster and with iSight, FrontRow on and on.
Now the question is: How much will the new MacBook cost with a similiar configuration. Will it have a Solo or also a Duo CPU like the MacBookPro? And... how good will the battery life be? Will it also have a battery time around 6 hours like the current iBook?
I won´t use iChat. I won´t watch movies with that Notebook and i want do photoshop work on it.
What do you think about that price for the iBook G4 and what would you do/ think?
I don't have a laptop, but is that the usual setup now -- home PC for graphic/music work, and laptop for net/office/presentations?
I've been thinking of getting a laptop, but with the roles switched. I can see myself using the laptop more for working on graphics on the road, and perhaps using it on venues for live music/dj'ing.
Ya go for the vaio. Macbook pro is currently slower that the powerbook when it comes do Photoshop / Illustrator (basically anything graphics related) because they have to use a binary conversion program which converts mac binary (such as current version of photoshop) into binary which the new intel chips will understand. so until adobe update to optimize for intel chips not much point in a macbook pro just yet.
in al honesty for a travel laptop, i'd take windows operating system for travel compatibility. i currently have a Toshiba and have no complaints, also try a Vaio. i have a Vaio home pc and have had great luck with. just some food for thought. but travelling with a Mac is gonna cause you some issues.
Wait for the MacBook (not MBP) if you don't need it now. I guess they'll come out on Apple's birthday. ;) Regarding the new Mac Mini config i suppose you'll get them as single and core duo versions. Expected price: same as actual iBooks or a bit above (about 100 ).

Thank you very much for all your messages. The arguments are all right and true. But as i said i will only use it for presentations, small graphics, internet, music and email. And ... i think i won´t get another notebook with 1gb ram and a 100gb harddrive for 1200 .
And... i got it yesterday. With an AirPort Express. And i´ve to tell you... i don´t regret it.
