Thinking about a mac mini
|
After nearly a 5-year hiatus from macs, I'm thinking of getting a mac mini, though I *might* regret it considering what an expansion- mix-and-match junkie I've become.
I don't plan to play games on it, just do the multimedia thing - play music, sync with ipod, surf the web, burn cds and dvds, and *try* use OS X as my everyday workhorse OS. I'd like to see what all the iLife fuss is about. My non-multimedia concerns are how I'll be able to work with my MS office files (lol.)
The mini's diminutive size seems to suggest that it's underpowered, but the processor seems decent (Core Duo.) Plus, I assume I can attach my NEC 19-inch as well as my PC keyboard and mouse, so no worries there. Up to 2gb of RAM is more than enough, too. I wonder just how many and what type of PC-peripherals I can attach to it . . . does this thing play well with a dialup connection? No laughing!
So, do any of you custo members have one of these? What's your take on the entry-level Intel-based mac? Is it just alot of flash, or is it worth the cash?

So here's the conversation I just had with an Apple Store sales rep (Yorkdale Mall, Toronto), word-for-word:
Me: Good morning, I'd like to know the price on a Core-Duo mac mini.
rep: Oh about 950-995 (CDN $), that range.
Me: How much RAM does it come with?
rep: 512mb.
Me: Expandable to?
rep: 1 gig. Well no, not really, but 2 gigs is expensive.
(at this point I'm thinking, hell, you can get RAM nowadays for a piece of gum. I threw 1 gig onto my Asus board for peanuts. Can't be *that* bad.)
Me: Just how expensive?
rep: About $700.
Me: Why on earth would RAM cost that much???
rep: Well it's a new kind of chip . . . it's new. Go to Apple.ca for more info.
I'm still trying to pick myself up off the floor. Seems I have to bend over real deep-like in order to have OS X Tiger check my mail and burn cds at a decent clip. Gimme a break.

That guy was full of shit. A quick search on the web shows you can get 2 gb of ram for a mac mini for under 300 hundred dollars.
Go find a quote online, print it out, take it to the guy you spoke with and tell him he's either ignorant or a liar.

I'm on a Powerbook with 512MB of RAM (yes, it's starved), and I haven't seen a performance hiccup even with more than seven "daily programs" running simultaneously.

Well I did it. Went in for a 17" imac 1.83ghz Core Duo, 667mhz bus, 2mb L2 cache, 512mb RAM (will upgrade to 2gb), OS X Tiger, iLife, Front Row, a nice ATI Radeon X1600 128mb, and lots more.
Even though it's got a 17" LCD, it seems larger due to it being a wide aspect and beautifully bright. Puts my 19" NEC Multisync CRT (bought summer 2002) to shame.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
I finally understand why these Mac zealots are foaming at the mouth . . . it's an entirely unique experience.
**wipes away foam with sleeve**
Thanks for all the help, everyone. :-)

I bought an iBook in the beginning of this month. It is a 1,42 GHz 14" version with 1GB Ram. In the beginning i had problems to handle the one button touchpad and the os. But after one week... i started with music recording. And it really is a different experience. The quality is good and the easy and simple way GarageBand works is enjoyable. I plug my M-Audio FireWire Dock into the iBook and everything works. After the first try.
Now i have big luck and will give this iBook to a friend of mine who considered to buy a notebook for pretty long. I gave him the iBook to try it out and he said he´ll buy it for the price i bought it. So i lost nothing. But i don´t regret it... and will wait until the new version with the intel cpu will be out.
And setting up your dial connection really won´t be a problem ;)
