first cancel every .exe under 'uxo' other than explorer.exe
then i would run some anti-spyware programs (ad-aware, spybot, xoftspy, microsoft anti-spyware/windows defender)
you may even want to run them in safe mode as some of them can download themself again with files still in your computer or not able to be canceled because they are a running process.
then run a virus scanner. if you don't have one get a good free one, i would recommend AVG.
Having bulk tabs open in firefox uses lots of ram. This isn't a bug. It's an option for some reason. Can be turned off though.
There is a spyware / virus thing that uses the name svchost.exe to try and trick people. Might wanna check it out.
Also might want to post a Hi Jack This log to some of the free geek help forums around the interweb.
You might use them, but it might be worth looking at turning off some of the less useful windows services that mant people dont use. I forget the Run command at the moment, but yeah, their is alot of crap you dont need that runs in the background using RAM.
also, did you try disabling all the exe's running under 'uxo'?
if you do this and your memory usage drops on your processes then you know it has to be a problem with something running in the background or just even runnning on screen.
I've asked someone about SVChost before, they said its part of windows (apparantly). Lol Butts mite be rite in that it is a virus pretending to be SVChost. In the past ive tried closing my SVChosts down, some close fine, others when u close crashes ur comp. So uuuh.. ye... pick wisely.
Yeah they are needed. But as I said there is a virus out there that poses as it. :)

Have nice formats :) u can try some more spyware programs, cause some spyware programs can find more than the others can... I use spyware doctor, adaware, and spybot.. I also suggest u http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ for free online virus and spy program search, it really works good... but in all that search time u can easily format and have a clean system :D
