rate kill.exe

sounds good to me.

first cancel every .exe under 'uxo' other than explorer.exe

then i would run some anti-spyware programs (ad-aware, spybot, xoftspy, microsoft anti-spyware/windows defender)

you may even want to run them in safe mode as some of them can download themself again with files still in your computer or not able to be canceled because they are a running process.

then run a virus scanner. if you don't have one get a good free one, i would recommend AVG.

Having bulk tabs open in firefox uses lots of ram. This isn't a bug. It's an option for some reason. Can be turned off though.

There is a spyware / virus thing that uses the name svchost.exe to try and trick people. Might wanna check it out.

Also might want to post a Hi Jack This log to some of the free geek help forums around the interweb.

You might use them, but it might be worth looking at turning off some of the less useful windows services that mant people dont use. I forget the Run command at the moment, but yeah, their is alot of crap you dont need that runs in the background using RAM.

be careful disabling services, some of them are needed for different things.

about the rate kill.exe

if it has to run in the background to disable something on a program i wouldn't trust it.

that dosn't make much sense if you ask me. why dosn't it just patch aim files and remove the code.

pretty shady if you ask me.

worst forums on the planet, no edit button.

also, did you try disabling all the exe's running under 'uxo'?

if you do this and your memory usage drops on your processes then you know it has to be a problem with something running in the background or just even runnning on screen.

ya msconfig is one of em, but i mainly use that for disabling programs that run at startup.

services.msc was the one i wanted, cheers.

Few websites around will tell you what most // all the services do. Fair few you can disable.

Yeah they are needed. But as I said there is a virus out there that poses as it. :)

Process File: svchost or svchost.exe
Process Name: Microsoft Service Host Process

Description:
svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: svchost.exe is also a process which is registered as the Trojan.W32.Dasher. It takes advantage of the Windows LSASS vulnerability, which creates a buffer overflow and instigates your computer to shut down. To see more information about this vulnerability please look at the following Microsoft bulletin: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-011.
mspx

This is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.

Have nice formats :)
u can try some more spyware programs, cause some spyware programs can find more than the others can... I use spyware doctor, adaware, and spybot.. I also suggest u http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ for free online virus and spy program search, it really works good...
but in all that search time u can easily format and have a clean system :D
