I've used nearly every modern skinning app, extension, program, anything. If Custo lists it, I've probably tried it. However, there's one thing I haven't used: Litestep. For some reason, I've never been able to get myself to go ahead and install it, perhaps because it seems more complicated, more foreign, whatever it may be.
So, talk me into it. I know alot of you love Litestep, and I have to admit, some Litestep themes are pretty damn sweet. And from what I think I already know, Litestep seems unbelievably customizable.
No one will be able to convince you with words alone. And you probably won't like it at first even if you did try because of the learning/comfort curve.
If you ONLY want to make your desktop look good, don't install Litestep. If you want to make your desktop look good, have more potential for functionality AND (this is the important one) you like to tinker, then install it.
litestep is good for all aspects of a desktop enviroment .. there isnt anything you cant do with it. main reason i love LS is its flexibility, i like having control of my desktop and i love changing it often. litestep just works.
Hi my name is popupkilla and i'm a litestepaholic. Not a day goes by without some change to my theme.rc. Or 2, Or 3.
Sorry Static: Posted by: Static- (*.hsd1.ut.comcast.net) 7-21-2006, 22:06 "there isnt anything you cant do with it."
One miniscule detail... Icon Packager + Litestep, at least that's what I've seen and heard from everyone else don't work together. But that's about it
If you can live with that, once you use it, unless you do not have patience and time to tinker, you won't go back. Although, it isn't actually a "skinning app", it's a shell. Give it a month, if you don't like it uninstall it, and if you can't find help here, which is rare, ask on ls-universe.info.
Oh and one last tidbit, before you play with the popup.rc, make a copy of it. Good stepping!! and hurry up before the 'boxers come and see us.
Litesteps cool if you've got time to lose, I had plenty so got hooked on it and made some amazing interfaces (including rss hookins, menu animations, player hookins, stat readouts, performancee triggers, building modules, etc.), otherwise go get a job or have a few children.
Just install Litestep, and use it wether you like it or not in the start. (ofcourse first modify it for your needs) because you just have to get used to it.
Yeah, definetly get a job or have some kids instead of LS.
I havent tried any other alt shell's, but I always assumed LS was the king, because it is so flexible, it can be made user friendly if the themer wants :D
but then again, there will always be errors, so you just have to get used to it, the whole structure, what is responsible for what etc
There seems to be a widespread misconception that LiteStep is a program that you simply run and "use" like any other app, and that you can form an opinion about it by just installing it and trying it -- again, like any other app. Let me tell you this: you can't. LiteStep is not a traditional program. It is quite uniqe even as far as shells go since it's so tremendously amorphous. It's not simply a shell, it is more than anything else an powerful toolbox for creating custom GUIs. Saying that you can do anything with it is really not an exaggeration or fanboy talk. Think of a 2D interface you'd like to have, and I assure you that it's possible to create it with LiteStep.
So in other words, I believe LS is for (almost) everyone. The only thing you need to do is find a theme that suits you, since themes is really what LS is all about. Also, many previous posters have said that LS takes a lot of time, and I'd like to clarify that this is only true if you're going to start creating or modding themes. Just using LS doesn't involve anything more than any other interface. On the contrary, LS lets you be more productive and saves time -- with the right theme of course.
quints been offline for 5 days, either he doesn't care anymore or we got him so hooked he's going mad and will make the next featured. Look out West! and congrats by the way. 0_o
