Customize.org dying again?

rkenshin says:

It returned as such a great community to try and bring back what was once a great site. But, is it being lost again?

Once a great community is turning into a community of rude and immature kids. All I read in reviews these days is "this sucks" or "-25 because you used a bmp" or "wow, you suck cock because this sucks", etc etc.

I myself have been harsh on reviews, but only as of late to the AmigaOS shots (since I'm sick of that guy saying "its soooo great, i am elite"). But, I don't rip on people's artwork hardcore (except for the hentai that was just submitted).

I mean, shit, I barely see reviews of stuff going up anymore. Not that this is a big deal to me, but it is giving me a sense of "Where did all the admins go all of the sudden?".

However, when I turn to another community ... let's say, Deskmod .... I am greeted by a nice community in which people aren't ripping on each other constantly. When a skin or wallpaper is bad, people tend to express in the form of "try this instead", attempting to help the artist out to "grow" and "expand" his knowledge.

But when I look at a place like this, the community's negativity would make a beginner artist stop what he is doing and not expand his possiblities or explore the fun and creativity of this "field".

Talking to several other users on instant messanging, I can say, they agree. Everytime I post here, myself, I feel such hostilitly towards everyone. Hell, I've received it. I have reviews by "FireX" stating "this sucks cock" out of the blue for no reason.

Does that matter to me? Not really. It's my artwork, not his. His opinion does not count to me. I like people's opinions, yes, but not if their going to act like 13 year old teens on a rampage and just be like "i had sex with your mommy last night. she owes me money" ...

Nothing can really stop the flaming. Nothing can stop the punk kids who register on these sites just to be annoying and just to get attention. Nothing can be stopped to make a world free from people putting each other down.

It's almost like a jealousy thing, I think. If one users makes a kick ass skin or wallpaper or screenshot, somebody else has to say "it sucks" because their wallpaper or skin recieved bad reviews or bad ratings.

With the recent loss of miriku because of his busy life, whats to happen to the rest? I see Adam making a lot of the reviews these days and postings. Yet, thats the only admin I ever see (hell, I even see him on Deskmod a lot, probably more than here (although its been awhile since I, myself, have seen him there (then again, I'm never using chatterbox or irc anymore))).

Reviews are pointless (that is, number ratings), mostly because it can somtimes give that person a big ego (only to some, not all). People can think "Haha, I got 100, and you only got a 93 ... therefore you suck". This is why I choose not to use a number rating (and I notice many others do the same as well, for a similar reason).

There are a lot of good artists on this community and/or any skinning community. There are artists to look up to and to learn things from to better ones knowledge. Hell, I find myself looking at Shinters stuff very closely, taking things apart just to see how he has done things so I can continue my ongoing learning process in the art field. I take apart his screenshots as well (mostly for the wallpapers that he can't release to the public). And, Shinter, overall is a nice guy who doesn't mind that. I'm sure he enjoys knowing that he can help and influence others.

But, when you get other artists who just don't care ... how are they an influence? They aren't. The denote others and make people not want to be in the art field.

All in all, I see it happening "most" on this site. Granted I do see put downs on places like Deskmod or Skinz or DevArt ... but not nearly as it is here on Customize.

Maybe I'm just over-reacting a bit. But then again, is Customize.org dying? Are we seeing its demise again?

The future only is what we make of it.

Peace.

I see what you are talking about.
The other extreme is DeviantArt, where for the most part everyone kisses ass and WOOT! FIRST POST.
They seem to be really concerned with having the most posts, comments, shouts....
I will point the the ARS-TECHNICA community as the best one I have seen yet.

the harsh reviews and childish comments have always existed on Custo. It was here long before it's initial demise and will probably follow it forever.
It's part of the custo experience. Love it or hate it, Custo won't leave you indiferent! :-)

I think most artist know what to make of a "this sux" review, especially when this person drowns everyone's work. I agree that it's misplaced and annoying, but who's really paying attention ?

It's sad that the top two threads are concerning if the site is dead or not. We (users) could do somthing about it by posting good reveiws telling the people what they can do better instead of going to the message bored and making multiple threads saying this site is going to die.

You talked about deskmod being all nice and fuzzy, custo was too when it reopened, thats why I joined, then the trolls started to join posting stupid post and such. If you are going to post "you suxorz my coxorz" just don't,and if somone does post that, ignore it... it's as easy as that to stop that.

Yeah, the post have slowed down, daily screenshot isn't updated as much, not many new forums, and alot of flaming going on, but you can make this site "more alive" by posting new work or new threads.

so yeah...

maybe admin should add a condition of using the site, that when u add feedback u can just rip on peoples work. Those who do get deleted, or the function of adding comments could be removed from the user.

I second Ia's idea. It's better to have constructive criticism. If a user is just 'that sucks'-ing then he will have a temporary 'ban' from the review feature. For like, three times. After three times he will be permanently banned from the review system.

Customize users should be able to 'warn' admins if there's a crappy comment/review posted with some button or something to make it easier for admins to get rid of them.

Alex

btw, deskmod may be good to the n00bs, but custo has an image being a rating bitch that way, and besides, people at dm rate everything way too fucking high. way too high. really. Average rating for every mod is rarely below 70
