hmm, since i got my ipod at the begging of last year, iv'e kinda gotten used to using itunes. its not bad, i like how you can easily manage your music/videos/movies/podcasts all in one place. tag editing is real easy as well. and the use of smart playlists does help if you have a big library. i don't see myself going back with winamp any time soon.
I've used Foobar almost exclusively for, oh, a year and a half or so, and it's been a revelation. Between the extreme flexibility and the myriad of extensions and plugins, I can't fathom how everybody couldn't tweak it to their exact specifications.
Oh, and as iPods go, Anapod is the crown jewel, in my eyes.
I 2nd antimatter's comment! foobar is currently the best imo ...the thing I need most that winamp hasnt is multiple playlists, does itunes have that? oh and afaik there is foo_pod plugin for ipod use with foobar tho I have no clue bout that since I dont have an ipod
Hmm, aMADme says I can update and control my iPod from Foobar so I think i'll try it out, thanks guys!. Im getting sick of itunes and although some people have introduced skins for it they are not very usuable/very good so im going to give foobar a chance.
winamp, even though it uses a bit more memory, I've gotten used to the thinbar modern skin sitting pretty on top of my taskbar :) itunes, not so much, always hate those 'running in background to support itunes' programs and I don't own and like ipods.
I've been using winamp classic forever. I only use itunes if I missed an episode of The Office and need to catch up, or if itunes has an exclusive download that I can't buy on cd.
I use Foobar and iTunes equally alike. I download the music and drop it into iTunes so it automatically organizes it in my music library. Then I tag up any mis-tagged items and add album art, then I close iTunes and listen to it in Foobar.
I still use Winamp too though, just for my porn of course.
Actually, the size of the playlist has very much effect on how much memory the program is using.. Many people don't know this, and I think that's why I was brought on this earth. To inform everybody about this phenomenon.
I have a default playlist that has all my music in it and thats around 25000 files ...when I was still using winamp it'd die on me with that playlist, foobar doesn't!!
I wish I could use winamp on os x. I really hate itunes and how bulky it is. I used winamp for half my life and got so used to how it was set up. I do have an ipod though; that coupled with os x forces me to use iTunes.
i haven't touched iTunes, as my DAP is an iRiver and no need for any software like iTunes or Media Player to copy over music or vids.
I'm still using Winamp with the classic skins, though I do occasionally mess around with Foobar too, its been able to help me out whenever Winamp has crashed and I don't feel like rebooting just to listen to some music
hmmm, i've tried foobar... i just can 't get the hang of it... i'm sure thats my poor custo skills, but i've simply not mastered it enough to get it to do the things i want... i do however use it when i'm playing games that go full screen... its memory footprint is so small it doesn't intefere with other things going on... as for iTunes, i honestly have only used it to view movie trailers from apple.com... LOL... it seems bulky and you just gotta hate that proprietary crap... therefore, i use winamp... it does everything i want, have used it for ages, and therefore it feels good... :-) i do wish it handled tagging chores in a more user friendly way though
i agree in everything with Aphaits. I actually use Winamp with ClearOne skin (it's only a default thinbar), playlist docked to the left. I also like the skins by Peter Clark and 883.
The things that still need work in Winamp are: 1-As StriplingRz says, easier tagging, multitag/rename would be great. 2-An easier modern-skinning
I wouldn't advise anyone to take up foobar based on some jaw-dropping columnsUI screenshot. Such configurations might look nice in screenshots, but in practice they're really more trouble than they're worth. The problem with having a fancy header preceding each album is that it is tethered to the first track; try moving one of the other tracks away, and it loses its artist/album identification. I prefer a simple listing of tracks, which can be dragged about to queue up a sequence for listening.
I don't really use foobar for its interface customization (winamp is pretty flexible as well). What I DO use it for is the following:
1. displaying LAME profiles (-aps, -ape, -V2 ect...) in playlists
2. advanced audio processing capabilities
3. great built-in masstagger
4. track history panel
5. tabbed playlists
6. light on resources
If you don't care about any of those things, then go with winamp. I wouldn't bother with iTunes; its limited customization and general... pushiness are a real turn off for me.
i use winamp classic. easy to skin, so it always looks great, compact, and very light on resources. i'm not in need of any cataloging/sorting features in any audio program, due to the fact that i only browse my songs through explorer.
in general, i hate itunes. barely customizable, and generally just ugly. anapod explorer is what i'd use if i had an ipod.
foobar looks GREAT in alot of screenshots, but it makes my head hurt whenever i download it and try to customize it.
