I know I've been here for a couple of years, since January 31st, 2005 actually and although it isn't that long, it feels like its been 5 years. Even though its only been two years, fellow customizers and I have seen some people improve and change a lot. Then there are a huge amount of customizers who have been here from the beginning (like all our favorites, c72, j3, heylove, all those peeps). I feel like some of you have seen me grow up (c72 ;)) and others, and I just thought it was cool and I had some free time on a Friday night so I thought Id write that. Anyways.... How long have you guys been here? What's your most memorable custo moment? and Who have you seen improve?
For me it would be January 31st, 2005, the time that guy was posting all the hateful things about America for like a month, even though that wasn't a good memory. And probably, Dive... who I've known since the beginning.
internet time always seems like so much more than real time. ;)
anyway...in answer to your questions: i've been here for 4 years and 7 months as of today. most memorable moment for me will just have to be an all-encompassing "hanging out in #customize" because there've been so many memorable moments there...everything from meeting all kinds of interesting and wonderful (and some not so wonderful) people, to gross-out moments, to the LMTs. as for seeing people improve...there's been a bunch, but i think that imrik is one that stands out the most in my mind.
Let's see ... I've been here for five years, three months (give or take). The time, it's been a-flying. It's certainly been a wild ride, to say the least. I don't have a memorable moment, per se, but rather eras.
First, the year-long period in which sw1tched, FrozenChrome, Azmyth, spen, snp, and myself (amongst others) were constantly engaged in an ongoing battle of oneupmanship, thanks to the advancements in customization in 2002 and the constant flow of inspiration from Fatoe and 123Klan. You could make the argument that this was the "golden age" of desktop customization, but I certainly won't.
Second, as the Fenster alluded to, the time she and I (along with a goodly portion of the longer-tenured members) spent in that channel, my goodness, were there good times to be had. And man, those LMTs, they were fantastic. It warms my heart to see another one in the pipeline.
As for somebody I've seen improve ... well, how about I just give a collective pat on the back to the entire community? The last year or two have been rough, what with the quibbles over the administration, the Dark Ages of nothing but uninspired Area.o4 shot after Area.o4 shot, and the relative inactivity. But hey, look on the bright side: we're back, and better than ever.
Well, I have been lingering around here for almost three years now. And mhm, it seems like quite a bit more time than it really has been.
Most memorable moment? Probably the time I showed staticuxo a screen shot of a suite I had been working terribly hard on alongside curre, and he thought it a wonderful idea to post it here on Customize. We didn't plan on showing it off until the release, so I was downright furious. He then further infuriated me by saying that he was unable to delete the submission (whether he was speaking the truth or not, I'm not certain). I yelled (well, used Caps Lock and many exclamation marks) for a while through IRC, and eventually he took it down. The suite ended up being scrapped anyways, though.
Big thanks Will! Your styles and level of detail have definitely increased in your work throughout these years, and that's great to see. Although I wasn't around in the old days here, comparing customization works from then and now, there are huge improvements. The most notable improvements being in the screenshots section. The composition and completeness of the shots are pretty amazing.
lets hope we dont have any more memorable experiences like that anymore hey dive? but I guess you learnt something out off all of it... dang shame though!!
I've been here 5+ years. I joined the same week you did, antimater. I'm hurt that I was left out of that, but you forgot about PeteCee. I greatly enjoyed that period in custo history. Those were the glory years. I also really enjoyed my first couple years on the staff, before things went bad.
Oh, fiddlesticks. Nothing personal was meant by that, FF ... in fact, I'm about 90% sure I had your name in there the first time I typed that up. My apologies. And you're right about PeteCee--he's the fellow who first inspired me to start playing around with so-called unusual color schemes. And five years later, here I am still using white and grey for everything. The more things change ...
My profile shows I joined august 17, 2001... I actually started hanging around here before the last relaunch... anybody still remember the forum that was put online after mark/steve bought the site?
WinT was who got me into customizing, I had browsed Deskmod a bit before it went under ... several times ... but WinT with his crazy tweaks just got me hooked. He was King in my eyes for a very long time ... and then when I ended up at custo in 2003 I saw that there were alot of other good customizers/skinners out there just with different styles.
