I have currently unchecked 'show desktop icons'. However I want do be able to drag some icons such as the drives onto my desktop, but they will only show if i check 'show desktop icons'.

When I do that all the crappy icons from before come back.

How Can I get just those drive icons and get rid of all the other shortcuts, without plainly deleting them?

You can't have it both ways with Explorer, either you have Desktop icons or you don't. If you want certain icons available but not others, you'll either have to delete or move the icons you don't want, or disable all icons and use a third party launcher to house the icons you want to keep.

I have avedesk but there are no ways of getting a desklet that allows you to have icons

Which is why I chimed in after nitzua. Litestep has desktop modules that allow you to either specify which icons are visible or to create a dummy desktop folder that will house only the icons you want, but I followed with interest your Litestep thread so that's apparently not an option for you. Other alternative shells have something similar, but if you had trouble with LS, I can't recommend that route. There is a free version of ObjectDock, only the Plus version costs money ($20 is too expensive?).

And after re-reading this thread...I think motorist meant turn off desktop icons and put your drive icons on ObjectDock, you could also do that with Avedesk. ObjectDock doesn't selectively hide/show individual icons either. IOW, short of an alternative shell, you will have to delete/move the icons you don't want, or disable all and use a launcher for the drive icons.

if you want to remove system icons from your desktop:

- rightclick desktop -> properties
- desktop tab -> customize desktop
- deselect everything you dont want
- delete other icons from desktop
- create shortcuts to your drives

theres a registry hack somewhere that will remove the recycle bin from your desktop. shouldnt be hard to find

@601pyro5hit9rind: Thanks a lot. You provided me a simple solution which no one could find. Forget Object Dock and all those programs I wanted original icons.

Thanks alot!!!!

I don't think people undertood that you didn't want the default icons on there.

I actually use DesktopX to do something similar. I have a DesktopX object that is maped to my c:\stuff directory that I use to dump stuff into.

I can then drag and drop things onto my desktop that just go into that directory.
