vray for still rendering,
mental ray for animation
but mostly vray

C4D's default engine serves me well, but slow even with an HT processor... also I'm not sure if I can use a 3rd party plugin for such things.

I'm not sure if we're talking 3D images or animation, but I use Blender for my animations -it's free!
