first i have win xp. i downloaded litestep and installed it from the exe and im getting tired of it and i dont know how to set explorer as the default shell. i read the instructions on litestep.net and they didint help so what should i do?
shit, should i just reinstall windows? normally i wouldint even ask and just go for it but i have like hella network connection tweeks and i fianlly got my dsl goin hella fast, like i download at 400kbps v. like 100kbps right after i install windows, i just dont want to loose the speed and have to start all over
There should be an uninstall file in the folder. Depending on which version of ls you installed. Do NOT reinstall windows. That's the solution for people who can't read the doc.
your in winxp, if that dowload didnt work, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, go to the proesses tab find liteste.exe, kill it, and go to FILE > RUN, and type expolrer , then hit ener, thi SHOULD load windows, if not your screwed
In OTS, the location of the uninstall file is C:\\LiteStep\\unintstall.exe In LSDistro, the location of the uninstall file is C:\\LSDistro\\Run Me To Reset Shell To Explorer.exe
Holy shit. That's very very very very old. I KNOW there is an uninstall file in lsdistro. So install lsdistro, just to replace your current litestep, then run "Run Me to Reset Shell To explorer.exe" www.lsdistro.com
gotta kill all 0.24.5 that still are around... and always, always, get litestep from www.lsdistro.com or www.litestep.net -- even the lsdev guys don't suggest us using 0.24.5, go figure!

fieroavian... There is absolutely nothing wrong with Dev builds and distros other than lsdistro....providing you understand what you are doing. Any NT-based OS, such as XP can be handled with ShellON to look after registry settings for LiteSTEP. Removing 'STEP from control of your OS is as easy as logging off and on again. I happily used 24.5 for years with no grief, long before all these 'Step for newbie- distros' came out. I'm still using 14.6, 20010102 dev build...[mostly] and have been since about 20010103....so that's over a year....again, as stable as a rock....used on 98, ME, 2000, Whistler, and XP. The only difference is that with the distro's you are getting [closer] to a themeing standard, rather than 'the good old days' when each themer did his own thing, and confusion reigned supreme. However, the 'good old days' taught you how to adjust another's theme to suit your own 'system', whereas now-a-days, people seem to have to rely on the likes of 'un-installers', etc, or they are totally lost, and if things go screwy, they re-install Windows unnecessarily. The most important letters in the English language as apply to LiteSTEP are 'RTFM'....;)
heh, as long as you stick with your LS theme, or themes that are made a year ago, no one really cares. you know the new builds have PNG support, and popup2.dll syntax was changed?
of course, there's nothing wrong with the likes of LSD4P, but they all have different structure than lsdistro, and since lsdistro has become a de facto standard, we should encourage ppl -- especially newbies -- to stick with it. i ain't in the dev team, but along with them i've been helping to make litestep easier to use. JAFO, your "confusion reigned supreme" thought really disappoints me.
*sighs

Newbies should most definitely use LSDistro. One of my irl friends said while we were eating lunch yesterday "LiteStep is cool, but you have to be an expert to use it!" my other friend, who i got hooked with lsdistro said "No you don't! With LSDistro any moron could use it! And besides, if we need an expert, we have one!" and looked at me.
I told him to use LSDistro to begin with, then move up to OTS, then possibly structure your own layout, like I have. He really loves it.
LSDistro should definitely be the choice for newbies.
lol... ass, dont you mean "DO NOT DOWNLOAD LITESTEP IF LIKE ME YOUR THICK" ? if you had taken the time to read the documentation you would have had no problems, as for lsditsro being for newbies sure it is, but that doesnt stop you from making a shell as good as any other release can, just depends on your imagination, and dedication
The most important letters in the English language as apply to LiteSTEP are 'RTFM'....;)
Just as I said...but some people cannot spell 'RTFM'.
I've hardly ever used releases/compilations such as LSDistro, as I had a reasonable handle on what I was doing with LS long before they came out. It was a slow learning curve, as each and every dev-build would have altered commands, so you were always chasing your tail keeping up and not having conflicting modules. The Distros, which-ever version are certainly better for those new to LS, especially within-built theme choices, etc....a definite advantage not having to take the long learning-curve of individual step coding.
What I'd hoped though, was that the advent of Distro sets would reduce the incidence of "Litestep fucked my computer it sucks donkeys arse"-type comments which do nothing to promote LS use to the masses, but instil a fear of alternate shell-usage which is unfounded.
I think some users/aspiring users are as clever as looking down the barrel of a gun, pulling the trigger, and saying "hey, I can see the bullet coming....."
fieroavian... The problem with LSDistro is that it is only 'a defacto standard', and like Linux, and other GNU license open-source apps, every man and his dog will want to create 'their' standard. There is more than one way to set up LiteSTEP, and do it safely, without incurring bugs, errors, etc.
I'm hoping that the 'standard' will eventuate and become all-encompassing, and capable of handling each and every module and permutation of them, but it's going to be a tall order. Sure, the core modules can be set easily with default scripting, but then there are idiots like me who just try to get LiteSTEP to do different things. That's how I set up my 12 themes to be all inter-linked and switchabe on the fly, just like with the Distros, only difference was that I nutted it out for myself, not by using a Litestep Installer proggy such as LSD4P or LSDistro.
Many years ago I rigged up a theme with 2 wharfs....I don't think it had ever been done at the time...certainly the modules/exe didn't support it, but I found a way...the theme was even first upped here...some time in 98/99 I forget which, and survived the Custo crash and revival, but is gone now for other reasons.
A concern of 'all the complicated stuff is done for you'-type LS Distributions is it will disempower the user, leaving him outside the real 'theme/shell/creativity' circle which was what I meant about 'confusion reigning supreme'....it made users think, and come up with innovative LS interfaces, not just pretty bitmaps and a Britney Spears wallpaper.
If a LS-User cannot understand what he is looking at when he looks at a step.rc file, or theme.rc...script.rc, etc [my 'distro' ended up with 53 rc files]...he's going to be left out of the theme-coding-creation process, and just remain a 'user' like the foolish Windows users who still think Exploder is a great shell....;)
So...after all this, there will be people who love to do their 'own thing' with shell design/themeing, and those who wish to create a mass-media shell for Joe Public. My worry is that we already have one of those...it's called 'Explorer.exe'...and it 'can' be 'themed' [sort of]. I kinda like LiteSTEP because it's a pain at times, not in spite of it, and for one, am happy to see the full Dev-build type themes such as mine, and many others' still in circulation/use.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with the concept of 2 'standards', one as per LSDistro, where themes are released as "LSDistro Ready", and another 'standard' where it's 'anything goes'....for those who would rather D.I.Y.
The world is big enough for both...don't you think?...;)
I had this same problem when i first got lifestep, it's very easy to use but can be very frustarating. Open up system.ini with a text editor. I just used edit from dos usually. At about the 10th line you will see "shell=c:/where ever lifestep is" all you have to do is get rid of the c:/lifestep part and change it so "explorer.exe". It's as simple as that.
well echo, if you read everything up ^ there youd know that my prob was fixed like a kinda long time ago by installing lsdistro over the old one and then uninstalling it. and i did everything in the registry i could and nothing worked.
