I'd love to stick with the standard explorer shell...

The first thing that came to mind for me, of using a VDM with Explorer was Heylove's screen shot.

At the bottom right is one. She only lists it as "dmvw" maybe you could ask her about it? Or maybe it was created using Samurize.

GoScreen claims it's lightweight. Don't know how customizable it is. Found it by Googling for virtual desktop managers.

Well shoot if I used a vdm and Explorer I'd use that tiny one. No mess no fuss, just what ya need.

I've been very happy using sDesk of late. It takes a little configuration to stop the (window) tearing, but being able to "scroll" between virtual desktops is much more useful than having them completely separate. (The settings for it to scroll when your mouse hits the edge aren't enabled by default.)
