After moving my stuff from deviantart because they are not able to sort the linux stuff out, I was kinda astonished, that my themes were resorted by the staff of customize.org. None of my themes is for Gnome, yet they are sorted as Gnome-Themes, when they have nothing to do with it. I do gnome-themes, the stuff I uploaded was none of theme. Since there is a category for fluxbox, it would be nice to have categories for the other window managers as well... in my case fvwm. http://www.fvwm.org but also openbox, waimea, evilwm and so on. If that is too much just make a "misc wm" category, but resorting to Gnome is not nice.
It's also not gtk... I don't understand why someone has other windowmanagers in the categories like FLUXBOX, but is not able to make a category for FVWM. The concept of a DE = Desktop Enviroment like Gnome/KDE, Toolkit like QT/GTK and WIndowmanagers like FLUXBOX, BLACKBOX, FVWM, METACITY, ICEWM, ENLIGHTENMENT DR16, WINDOWMAKER is really not that hard to understand. Anyway, I will remove my stuff.
I'm a *nix user as well, but, at this point, demand here at Custo for linux themes isn't really high. I think having a standard linux category should be ok for the time being..
You should definitely resubmit your stuff though saigo, it's great to see new stuff out :)
Yeah, there's what 7-8 linux users I know of here? But make a good enough theme and us windows users will drool and be envious. Lyrae does it to us often.
You do not understand my problem, do you? If someone would sort WinXP Visualstyles into Windowsblinds it would simply cause problems for the people who download it. If the theme is sorted into gnome, people who use gnome will download and try to install it, which won't work... it doesn't matter how many download or are interested in it.
Yeah, I agree with saigo. We need a linux section so people will not get confuse on whether fluxbox is for windows. I also make openbox themes but there is no category for it. It is time to tidy up and add a Linux section for us linux users and add more categories. And by the way, I'm a she.
saigo - thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you are bringing this up.
The Linux categories certainly needs work. I'm sure that if we make all the categories and a proper Linux section, we'll get more Linux users here. The goal is to have a special http://customize.org/linux page (maybe even autodetect?) so all the Linux stuff will be in one spot.
Could one of you Linux veterans please make a wiki page giving a general overview of the different theme options? Kinda like what saigo listed but with a bit more info. I do find it quite confusing and haven't seen a comprehensive overview elsewhere.
Also, there are a bunch of submissions in the queue needing new categories so I'll add those. saigo, I'm not sure what happened with your sub but if you resubmit I'll make sure it gets to the right category.
i think, if there are more linux related sections and if the linux things are more structured, customize.org can become a huge ressource of linux themes as well...
i updated the linux help page a bit (so please someone should have a look) and i think the content of "how to custo linux" page should get into the linux help because its general info so far. i think the help page should list and explain the apps shortly and the how-to page should give hints and tuts...
Hey I know I'm not going to contribute much to the discussion with this post, but let me just express my frustration as someone spoiled with Windows customization who recently installed Ubuntu:
...I am sick of seeing GTK and Emerald themes that are either ripoffs of Vista or OSX. Linux needs some customize.org love.
That is extremely strange. It ought to be Windows users emulate other OS's they wish they could use.
I would suggest besides increasing the Linux section finding those hard-to-find themes and subbing them here WHILE giving proper credit and linkage to the original author.
Unless that's impossible. Then persuading the person who made said skin/theme to join up here and sub it himself/herself.
I really hope that Customize.org becomes more Linux friendly, because I've just started getting into Linux, but wouldn't have a clue of how to customize it the way I know with XP, so the more screenshots / themes / skins that I see for Linux the more I'll learn =)
Edited http://customize.org/help/Linux again (thx to lukeen for his prework ;)). Maybe someone could look over it again, because I added, removed and restructure some things. I also removed the window managers which are shipped with the DEs from the popluar section, because they usually do not work fully/at all without the installed DE.
I would like to see more engine related themes here: neutronium, rezlooks, clearlooks, and maybe a few murrina. The only thing I fear is the gnome.look (I'll change a few colors and give it a funny name "X-Murrina" and so forth) ethos coming here. I like the originality customize.org radiates, it would benefit any designer, digital or otherwise (I build sets) to see what all the kids are doing. The strange thing is that there are links from gnome.look to deviantart, but nary a blurb about custo. But thanks to designers like lyrae, crimeboy, freakcode, quandar etc. there's more quality stuff out there. and we've gotten a bit cooler. Now all we need is a queen...
