This is the thread for the impromptu, but hopefully annual Wallscreen Contest, named as such because it will be comprised of screenshots built off of one chosen wallpaper.
First, we need to vot on what wall to use.
Here are the nominees, comprised (also in an impromtu fashion) from some user suggestions. A strong preference has been given to those suggestions that have a wide range of resoultions.
if there's some kind of funky write in vote where i missed a really good one and everyone wants it, we could add a choice, but i think no matter what we choose it will produce some cool results. vote on a choice. (they're invisibly numbered starting at one from the top down) with your vote, note whether or not you'll be submitting an entry.
voting begins now and ends at 11:59 pm EST wednesday.
after a wall is selected for the contest, entries will be accepted until 11:59 pm EST wednesday, january 22nd.

@noka: the wall you speak of didn't have a very large max resolution, or i would have put it on the list.
sorry about the lack of colors guys, when/if we do another one of these, i'll include some more of the rainbow. as it is, i was just trying to get something up and going asap.
i agree with the point of having more colorful walls. no 2,5 and 6 isn't so much fun to experiment with, imo. no 1,3 and 4 is better and the ones that swayso mentioned.
due to the lack of enthusiasm i'm sort of seeing as far as potential entries, i've decided allowing modifcation of the color of the winning wall could possibly drum up more excitement.
so, adjusting hues, brightness & contrast, etc is acceptable. also, since the chosen wall has a few different versions, any of those differentiations are also fair game. make sure you credit the original author when performing any alteration.
entries will be accepted until 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, January 24th. when you submit your shot, link to it on this post. i'll go about creating a bundle for all of the entries in a bit.
rules will be a lot like SSC07: one point for a 'like', and two for a 'love'. those votes of users not participating in the contest will also count. any like/love abuse will surely be noticed and the user will be disqualified.
"due to the lack of enthusiasm" might have something to do with the lack of straight up information, first some voting over not to good choices, then later in the thread comes some other info.
For future reference: Instead of limiting voters choices to a few walls, perhaps you can just allow them to pick from any wall limited only by a min resolution.
On a tangent: Another cool idea would be to allow the participants to mod the wall as they see fit, but it must include a few original elements so you can see the original in the mod. Kinda like a photoshop tennis match.
Photoshop Tennis Match... wow, not heard that phrase in quite a while. And yes, a long time ago, wasn't wall modding the norm? You're custoing the desktop, and the wallpaper is part of the desktop. And then I look and think and yeah, the thread is titled Wallscreen Contest, so i'm a fool and full of stress now, like a cow with no socks outside. Next time, maybe next time.
i agree with nitzua. i felt this was a pretty decent idea to get some more submissions going, with quality hopefully above average. just for a laugh of course. i don't really think it was rushed either. i mean, how long can it take to decide on a usable wall based on 6 alternatives?
but here's a thought. why don't we just postpone this for a few days. add a few more wallchoices with more colors and possibilities. maybe more people would participate? or is this thing dead even before it's birth?
i personally think it's a good idea to begin with, and that it would be a shame just to let it pass by.
Well, what I meant by "rushed" was that this idea was only thought of a couple days before the voting, and then after a couple days of voting, the contest started. I think we need some more planning, and find a really nice variety of wallpapers. If we get people anticipated about this, more people would be in the contest.
i don't mind at all if we pause and reformulate the rules. i like fate's suggestion of allowing any wall...i thought about it, and the result of sticking with one wall wouldn't really be any more astonishing.
i say these could be suitable guidelines:
-choose a wallpaper, design a screenshot after it -inspiration should come from the wallpaper and go into the icons/vs/etc, not the other way around -min resolution = 1024x768
if anyone wants to add/edit anything, speak up. also, note if you will be participating or not. it's not imperative to establish a list of participants, but we still could. as soon as we decide on some final rules and get a list going, i'll make a new 'official' thread.
I'd prefer just one wall/set that everyone has to use. It encourages being innovative and forces you to work with a wallpaper, rather than what will be a "do whatever" contest. I can predict the result of that one already. I just feel it won't be much of a contest if people can choose from six completely different wallpapers - that's just seeing who has the most likes over a week period.
I don't know if it's just because people think it's too hard to do anything with #1, or whether it doesn't have enough to base a contest around. I was happy with the original rules, but I'll join regardless, provided the closing date is at least into February.
@thomax: i didn't designate whether modding the wall is acceptable, but i don't think it should be. what do others think?
@mailmerge: that was my same reasoning behind choosing one wall. oh well. the deadline will be well into february and i think it should be a vote on the entries rather than a like/love contest. imo counting loves/likes would distort the idea of picking a shot based on how well it follows the wallpaper theme.
I liked the original rules as well, but no one seemed to like that idea. I would have liked to have seen how well each person worked with the chosen wall. Now its just all over the place, lol.
My shots pretty much suck so I probably wont join in anyway.
I won't personally participate in this contest, but to me the most interesting version would be all people working on a setup based on one to three wallpapers to choose from. These walls should not be some of the simple ones above, but more complicated ones, like j3's, which contain many elements to use in a vs.
This contest would also be very cool with setups based on websites, i would probably join that one.
i wont be joining the wall one as i already have enough stuff on my own plate. however, i think the website idea is a good one that i would like to join in on. def. write that one down to start in maybe a month or so....even though we already know who the winner is if pepij steps in :p
I don't really see the point of this as a contest if there's no common point around it. Still think you guys should choose a wall and build setups around it. Maybe that's just me... but it would be cooler I suppose...
Oh, I see, it's cool. But maybe if first you could get around five people that intend to join it would be easier, with these said ~5 people thinking together, to get a common wall to work with.
Doesn't it seem kind of silly to make a contest with those rules? I think a matching wallpaper and theme are vital to any screenshot. To me, the original rules actually made more creative sense.
nharren: that may be true, but here we're asking people to START with a wall, and build the rest of the shot around it.
this has already been done by a few folks, but they weren't following any guidelines.
one could make an attractive ss with areao4 and a gradient wall, but it wouldn't be a 'wallscreen', or a screen created solely around a wallpaper. in other words, picking certain elements for a good ss may occur in any order, i.e. icons first, then vs, or vs first, then icons, then foobar, then wall, etc.
we're asking that everyone who enters pick a wall, and build the best ss representation of it and around it.
i'm about to just to do a shot and either submit or save it ;)
Yeah. SSC08 rocks and everyone gets hyped about it. Something tells me that akka has a very good shot/idea for it - he seems to want to get on with it!
