One Last Gasp

The Custo scene has been decaying. The innovators have all but disappeared. The site, the community, has lost its passion. The underlying, silent competition that drove innovation and new ideas, like the sky scrapers in our cities has lost its fire. But, before its permanently laid to rest, I propose one last rebellion against the formulas. A contest between the last two groups. 4 Impressions and Nuance, you're being called out. You're being challenged to produce a suite to stand side by side with your rival in an attempt to win the very broad and highly subjective title, "Best Suite". Not for a tangible reward, but to serve as an epitaph for the grave that is this community. A marker representing what this place once was.

Sincerely,
An Old Schooler

That's quite the throwdown for someone who just joined today to post this. Also quite the insult to others who are still actively contributing (I'm not including myself). An 'Old Schooler' would obviously have a previous account here so why mask your identity. I think you'd maybe be taken more serious as an active member. But again that's just my opinion.

I agree completely with jg-visuals. You just joined custo today? c'mon man. And also do you mean the custo scene in general? Or customize.org? I am by far not an "old shooler" here at custo, but i have been here long enough to know that you do not have the right to call out these incredible groups. You forgot to mention Visionleague as well by the way. I'm not ready either to write custo's epitaph also. I'm an optimist. :)

Well, he has a point. Not about that "contest" but i'm been thinking the same things myself. Bad submissions in general & very few compared to what once was. Although making a new account just to post this is just lame, why hide your old school ass?

Give it time, some are slowly transitioning to a new OS with a steep learning curve towards skinning. It may be sometime yet before people settle on whether to keep skinning for an old OS or go for it with the new one. Only time will tell.

I'm sorry, but this sounds like: "Hey, I want a new suite, so you guys make me one in form of a competition..." Why not revive the scene yourself? And yes there are more groups and individual members that do just amazing stuff, those should definitely not be forgotten, so if there was to be such a competition it should be open to anyone.

Even if what you say is true, personally, I still prefer the current custo community to others, like devart. And I'm not even close to what is considered an "old-schooler." Keep on trucking custo! :P

Out of sheer curiosity, does anyone come here for customization purposes?

I check in every now and again only to see if this place has died; I have a strong feeling I'm not alone.

sumdumguy: why hide behind a new acc? People that hide are always afraid of something.

advent: never, in 4 years of being a member, having made a contribution to a community and then coming back frequently to see it dying?! Haha.

I'm glad some (major) people here disapprove the fall of this community. And so do i.

Haha, I wouldn't quite say I haven't made any contributions. They aren't quite as obvious or tangible as submissions, but they're there.

I'm here because the original poster issued a challenge to Nuance. I'm a Nuancer. We're working on a project we think the community will like (no promises on a release date), and I'm trying to see if there are enough people who would benefit from the project to justify us putting more time and effort into it.

Holy poop, this commenting system is eight kinds of awkward. Sorry for the forum-spam above!

To say advent hasn't contributed is pretty ignorant. Though he has not submitted much, he has done quite a lot of work with us. When Akka and I first founded Nuance back in the day, we brought Henry (Advent) in because we knew about his excellent coding skills and that's exactly what he brought to the table. Our start of the group would have been much tougher without him.

That being said, I kind of want to shed some light on the situation at hand. The reason for this downfall of the customize.org community stems from the lack of care of the site. If the owners are putting no care into the site, why should the users?

The reason why the old school customizers (at least my reasoning) are no longer around is due to the fact that a lot of us were use to the old site in which things you did had an impact. The release of EVO ruined the site. The owners released it to be totally user ran (which i think was a cop out so they wouldn't have to care for it). An idea that truly backfired. Without any sort of God like figures on the site with the power to do anything, there is no site.

There is also the fact that without moderation, the site just kept getting flooded with crap. In the old days of custo this would have not ever happened. Things that are considered awesome here nowadays would have been deleted in a heartbeat previously. It was where the best of the best could be and we were all honored to have our work shown. We even more honored to get a good review.

As more and more kids started joining, only a select few flourished in skill because they actually took the time to sit down with a lot of the greatest in custo to take what they had to say to heart. Mostly from the new wave of members were whiny little bitches who couldn't take the slightest bit of criticism.

A lot of us were just sick of it and talk(ed) amongst ourselves in our IRC rooms and kind of just passed work back and fourth.

We're all still here but hardly any of us visit the site anymore. We all still talk, etc.

As far as a competition, i don't like that idea. 4IMP, Nuance, and VL have never really been in competition because we all cater to different styles of design.

Well at least we have a dialog going. Maybe a new site is in order.
I do agree with Capitalizex about the site being flooded with crap, then again who am I to judge, a lot of people may consider my stuff crap as well. At least I'm still willing to contribute. Regardless I guess if it gets the recognition I feel it deserves.
Too much ego is a bad thing, just as bad as having no pride.
Now that I think of it maybe I will create a new site, be god and crap be banished forever, or at least what I judge crap.
The world can never have too many Vista clones or Anime it seems.

I haven´t posted in a long while. And i haven´t been around for a while. But i just talked to lamplighter about a new release for Gaia.

What do you think? Should we get together and do a new community suite this year?

unfortunately the motivation isn't there anymore. I get the impression all of us who were involved (and made) the community as good as it was have kind of just moved on to bigger and better things. Most just customize for their own personal functionality rather than to build an impressive fancy desktop to show off.

one thing a lot of people don't realize is also that the prime of the customization community was a pretty long time ago and a lot of us have grown up quite a ton. I for one am now getting ready to graduate from college with my CSE degree and work as an IT spec. almost 70 hours a week while going to school. Before, I had time a lot of time to kill.

it would be cool to see a new suite but i wouldn't put too much hope in for it. Especially since Gaia wasn't nearly as good as it was thought to be and didn't turn into a community suite as planned...it basically was a few people doing the suite, not a community.

Besides, a full suite built by everyone isn't really a working concept.

@ Imrik: Like JG, I'm up for a community suite so atleast there's some support for one :)

It sounds like the old-timer custo-ers (atleast from what capitalzex is saying) are getting too old to really put in alot of time + effort into the site anymore :( Perhaps its time for a change in leadership to us younger blokes with more time to burn?

I'll say this again, but I am not an old-timer (and it sounds like none of my stuff would have survived in the old custo T_T). But I would really, really hate to see this place fall apart, because I like the custo scene alot.

And now that I think about it, it does seem like the stuff coming in recently hasn't been quite up to par as to what I was seeing the same time last year. Still, that shouldn't stop people from submitting quality stuff. C'mon peoples, I know the talent is there; I mean, its not like somebody Hoovered it out of everybody.

Oh yeah, and has the way of picking the "Popular Additions" on the front page been changed? It seems like your stuff had to be really good to get on there, and now its like random stuff picked out of the "These just in..." section.... Seems like that may be contributing to the overall effect as well.

lol I'm going to stop writing this and get back to school homework....but my point is that custo should still be worth trying to rescue and that it would be a terrible shame to see all of the work that was put into it to be for nothing. Well, certainly not nothing, but you get the point.

Ah Darksheer. I miss him. The general IDEA of EVO is great, there's nothing better but in ANY site there NEEDS to be admin rule! As you can see, not even submissions are being deleted because there are no more admins that are active and now there's no one to appoint new staff.

Besides, there's only a few talented customizers that have popped up in recent days that have actually shown themselves.

i agree with caps first post. ever since we had that problem with the mods back in the days. without moderation this site has turned into a deviantart. lets just all submit photoshop filtered wallpapers and naruto copy and paste images to accumulate 5 billion deviations. when we had mods it was a freakin joy to browse the recent submissions to see my favourite artists submit their work. now it takes two seconds because the quality is just garbage copy and paste copyrighted images with freaking filters. the day we get mods back is the day you will see community. until then it's just little kids posting "cool" wallpapers.
