Kind of new to the desktop customizing thing, currently using bits and pieces of rocketdock and rainmeter (HUD vision), but was looking for a minimal taskbar to replace the Vista one. I have mine currently on auto-hide. Any suggestions?

yeh it would be great if there was a simple way to do it
at the moment some of the options I know are setting up a config in samurize to replicate the startbar... its a bit complicated and also doesn't have the same feel (buggy for me when i've tried it) however some have pulled it off.
other options are running an alternative shell like litestep or one of the bb variants... they however will also skin the rest of your windows etc.
many people have turned their dock into a taskbar, with different docklets and a taskbar hiding app.
Thats not really what I needed, all I needed was to change the start button. I worked out a roundabouts way to do that.
This is how. 1) hide the start button by using an application called startkiller 2) download a program called exmenu (found it http://rocketdock.com/addon/docklets/4694) 3) create a shortcut to that program in your quicklaunch or a new toolbar in your taskbar. 4) customize the shortcut - change the icon to the icon you'd like, tweak other settings such as show text on toolbar, rename the shortcut title to Go or Start.
There's your new start button.
