does anybody know of a simple and stable window skinner? I find XP's windows as sterile [and butt-ugly!] as Mac's are glitzy. Themes don't work for me because they're all-or-nothing [i always find some aspect of the cure is worst than the disease]. I.e. i have an animated cursor [Pastumi] that i won't give up for the sake of a theme. I just tried LiteStep, which was a hideous experience [insult to injury: it was even murder to uninstall]. I also tried pcman's skins but, despite having installed uxtheme.dll, none worked. Please help! Infinice
[PS: re 3D. I'd be grateful to hear of any 3D effects [not rotating a'la Linux desktop]. I already found one i recommend- it adds drop shadows to all windows: y/z shadow.
Litestep doesn't skin windows, it replaces explorer.exe as the shell. I'm almost guaranteeing you didn't spend enough time with it.
If you aren't satisfied with visual styles (patching uxtheme.dll) for whatever reason, you could try WindowBlinds. Other than that, you're kinda out of luck.
I'll stand by what i said about Lifestep: it *does* offer skins or their functional equivalent [that just didn't work; sorry, i forgot the term LifeStep used], it *did* nuke my right mouse menu and cntrl+alt+delete manager, and gave me a few scary moments when i tried to uninstall it. Tried Windowblinds- forgot why i didn't like it. I do remember trying several other Stardock products: they all seem to have some fatal flaw. StarDrek! With the oceans of freeware available i'm surprised there is no simple stable workable standalone windows skinner [that doesn't all-or-nothing you, by taking over whole desktop with cursors etc.]. thanks for the response tho. if you want something minimal, i've found that bb4win also can skin your windows...well, try "bblean" the version that stills updating (also i'd recommend download the respective plugin for deeper window skinning)
