Theres 3DSMax for the true pros, but it costs about 4000 dollars. Then theres Bryce, whcih is cheaper but still expensive, but quite popular. there are also many less known nice apps, and a good free option is Blender for Linux

Moray (shareware, uncrippled but w/ nag, 80$ to reg) + PoVRay (freeware). Moray's the modeler, PoVRay's the rendering engine.

Get blender.I think blender is great. And it's free, the only problem is it's clumsy feeling interface. I actually found a a complete copy of alias | wavefront power animator in my old company's trash a year ago, (dead dot com) very high end (the box is huge, w/ many many books) but it will only run on a silicon graphics box...... :-( And older copies of 3d max r. 3 can be be had for much less......

I use blender. Never worked in something else so I don't know whether it's better than other programs or not, but even it is worse than other programs, the fact it's free makes up for it.

DOES 3D STUDIO MAX WORK WITH WINDOWS XP??? CAUSE MINE DOESNT...

U have to register on strata's web site to be able to use it. once you put the serial in once, you'll be able to use it forever. I like it because its really drawing based, kinda like a 3D photoshop. not too many fancy effects, but that's what you get for a free program. I would also recomend openGL but you need a compiler and knowledge of C++ to use it well.
Hope this helps

truespace is annoying as hell. designed in the czech republic i think and confusing interface. It uses the left side view so i think the rest of the world uses left side view in a 3 view drawing and America uses right side. OK me dumb, byebye

personally I think TrueSpace is much easier to learn than 3DSMax. But what 3d program isn't confusing at start?

trueSpace is the best 3d program to start on. I did when I was like 13 or 14. I also started with Bryce, but that's more difficult to model with. SIMPLE for landscapes. More difficult to make something look good; HOWEVER, you can make things look REALLY good with bryce. Anyway, I moved on to 3dsmax and have been using that ever since. I touched Lightwave once but disliked it. I would suggest 3dsmax becuase it's render engine is by far superior to most things out there, all but Maya. HOWEVER, if you're using Maya for ANYTHING but movies and animations it's over kill. Yes maya is amazing 3d, random tree brush paints all different 3d trees that are good looking. Yes you can have amazing animations. BUT, you don't need that. Stick with 3dsmax, if you can't afford it, go with Strata OR Cinema4d which a lot of people like. Most people use Cinema4d to create some of the things you see out there. If you're a pro you can see which things were done with Cinema4d and which weren't. However, I'm willing to bet it will give you the effects desired. There's a bunch of tutorials out there for Cinema4d that will help you with creating some of what you see. There aren't quite as many tutorials for 3dsmax along those lines, just tutorials that are geared towards real modeling. Strata is cool but it's like trueSpace, great to learn on, but you have to move on. 3dsmax is what you use when you graduate from trueSpace/Strata. trueSpace has a completely different interface but I always loved it. Just not the best for creating those abstract things you see floating around the net. That you'll need MAX or Cinema4d. 3dsmax will be the BEST bet though.

I never got the hang of TrueSpace but in my opinion 3Dsmax is still the best.

i use Lightwave 3D 7.0 and in my opinion its better than all the other ones out there-- http://www.lightwave3d.com ... of course its 3000 + dollars... but thats beside the point ;) 3dsm is awsome though... if ur money is low try to find Inspire 3D its a good little program..
