The future os Microsoft Works?

Will MS release a new version of MS Works? It's still at version 6 (released in 2000). I believe that a new vversion could come out this year.

As said earlier by whody, the next version of windows (codenamed blackcomb) will be part of their new '.NET' business strategy. Innovative, but at the same time a total pain in the ass. The idea behind .NET is that the major portion of a program (in this case Windows) is based on a MS server somewhere and only the bare minimums are on your system. This would be useful for PDAs but how many people would want officeXP on their palmV? furthermore, it requires a monthly 'subscription' to have and use the product. Microsoft wants a steady income that only grows. They say that it is anti-piracy, I say that its oen last hurrah for microsoft.

My opinion is that a governing body should be established to decide what the standard for computing should be and then everyone can build off of that (ie linux, where there is the base kernel and then many variation with unique features and designs). This way products would be purchased based on merrit instead of convenience.

Tidus and whody are correct. Why do you think MS is branching out into game consoles (which will morph soon enough into a "set top box" media center, which they can sell services for.....) they know they are doomed. Windows will exist, but I think it will rarely be updated. Just an artifact for people who are...... well, dumb. Word is they're redoing the whole file system for the next release. My bet is it'll be more UNIX like (that is, laid out with some logic rather that having shit scattered wily nily.) Probably will support it a long time, but that'll be it. They're counting on the nature of Mom and Pop computing to morph into this services/set top box bullshit. It probably will. And all the people who are really into computers will use a real, open OS. Course, this is all conjecture on my part.

"My opinion is that a governing body...." YOU are the governing body!

this is why we all must do all we can to resist this crap. things like .net and the cdbtpa are slowly scraping away all of your technology rights.

companies like microsoft and derranged senators like those behind the cbdtpa want to "protect capitalism" and "the free economy" by cracking down on piracy. according the the cbdtpa, if you violate anti-piracy laws, you'll get 5 years in the slammer and/or a $500,000 fine.

all you great artists out there using copies of photoshop? your creative outlet will be silenced. all you music lovers out there who buy CDs, and convert them to mp3 so you can listen on your portable player? your love for music will now be censored. everyone out there using open-source programs like mozilla, linux, etc.? those programs will be made illegal.

how about instead of punishing simple and quite innocent stuff like this, we ask the government to punish people who really hurt the economy- carjackers, insurance fruaders, etc. not 15-year old Joe Regular sitting in his basement listening to mp3s while surfing the net on mozilla and using a copy of windows98 that came with his parent's computer.

i'll keep windows xp forever probably.. i like windows 95 because you can see the whole system by right clicking on .ini files.. more customizable.. what they wanna do, however, isn't what i like. i don't like looking at one window with nice little buttons that say LISTEN TO MUSIC, DOWNLOAD MUSIC, GO ONLINE... that's not getting the most you can get from your computer.

as the scripters that script all of this keep making better programs, the average idiot gives them more money..

Dextro says:

i used to (keyword there) like Microsoft. Back in the day, they were a good company. Good software. However, and unfortunately, as of this moment a good majority of anything computer-related is somehow connected with Microsoft. If you buy a new computer (non-Apple), you're paying for a version of the latest Microsoft OS. In my opinion, Windows is the easiest to use OS out there (i.e., keeping on subject here, it's very nicely idiot-proofed). I'm starting to like the MacOS even more, but I still have a hard time doing something I want to (i.e., they're almost idiot proofed). The unfortunate thing is that if you want to program (hey guess what) you need to purchase a Microsoft code compiler. As far as my knowledge, I know of no other Visual Basic Compiler. There are a lot of good C and Java compilers, but of the ones I've used Microsoft has the easiest to use. Also, my opinion is that Windows is the OS to do average computing with. However, if you haven't noticed, hardcore music, video, and graphic designers/artists/producers all run the MacOS. And as I have found out in this post, this .NET service is going to doom all computing as we know. Paying a monthly service to even be able to USE your computer in the first place is fucking ludacris(sp?). What these bastards at Microsoft have done is outrageous. Maximizing the business and profitable potential out of a product is expected, but Microsoft has gone too far. Having established themselves as the leading competitor for anything computer-related, these assholes have begun to exploit the retarded, stupid, IQ of 5 average "Joe" into thinking that he needs Microsoft. As a result of the majority of the population being the average "Joe", they have market, mob, and supreme rule. The stupid have conquered. The intelligent few (i.e. most of us here) are getting royally screwed up the ass. We will either have to put up with old software, use the minority in the software world, get forced into paying a monthly subscription to even be somewhat productive. I genuinly think that Windows has the capability and backing to be the best operating system out there. However, with a bunch of greedy, dispicable CEO's trying to make their paychecks double in the next year behind it, it's only going to get worse. This .NET that Microsoft is planning is fucking insane. And the worse part is that the public will fall for it. Why is AOL so popular? Because it's easy and the user doesn't need to think to use the software. That's how we get screwed. The ignorant public gets duped by some easy to use piece of shit software, and the rest of us are left to conform so we can use, stay in contact, essentially be even somewhat productive. I have no idea if this thread made any sense at all, but shit. Before Microsoft follows through with this bullshit.NET, we need to do something. We all know the ignorant public won't. And this new bill tightening the computer market goes right along with it. Big companies like Microsoft will make billions off it, but the small upstart will bottom out before it even gets a chance to produce it's first piece of software. Specifically, ALL OF THIS SHIT IS SCREWING OVER THE AMERICAN ECONOMY. (sorry, but I'm a crazy American). What drives the market right now? Computer electronics. What are these college grads getting their Ph D's in? Computer science. What is going to be the future of anything? Computer electronics. And what happens when you make it so that there is no possible advancement? The economy shit's it's last and final brick. What Microsoft and this new bill are eventually going to do is screw over the American economy. And when we fall, everyone else will follow. Remember the American stock market crash of 1929? You should, because it caused your country to have an economic recession at the least with five years of Black Tuesday.

We ARE the minority. And we NEED to speak up. We cannot let any of this bullshit progress any farther than the whiteboard. Remember the movie Antitrust that came out January 2001? No? Well there's a reason for that. Get on KaZaA, download it, and watch it. That is exactly what is going to happen. That is exactly why the movie had no publicity. And we need to do something about it. Remember, we are now the minority. And we need to speak up.

and the market crash of '29 would be impossible to duplicate today. The market can't crash like that. The computers (very few of them running M$ products, btw) won't let it. The trading just shuts down if it reaches a certain velocity downwards. This happens to stocks everyday, because of all the volatility this new fangled electronic trading produces.

and it was a depression, not a recession. and it lasted about ten years.... I actually think it would be good for a certain segment of our society to be hungry for couple years...*cough*uppermiddleclasssuburbia*cough.

.NET will be implemented and it will go over like gangbusters with your Mom and Dads. They'll sell a shitload of xboxes and PCs whatever evolves from them and make even more money.

But you, of the higher IQs or whatever can make a choice and run an open\free OS of your choice and never have to worry again about being dicked around. You really do have a choice in the matter.

Are you even really understanding my posts? are you listening? of course that's what I think. they are here to make a buck, and to only make a buck. Most companies exist for this reason. It's called capitalism, and it's really the only reason you have a computer, a house, a shiny new car, a playstation, guns, dope, etc. etc.

"i think Windows 95 was 100 times more open source than windows xp."

that it is an incorrect sytement. windows has never been open source in any way. Ever. To even say that is laughable. Ha ha ha.. To use the term "open source" and "windows" in the same sentence is downright ignorant.
Open source software is software where the source code is freely distributable.
Does not apply in any way to any win distro. In any way. Ever.

And open source users won't be shut off. If users create a demand, someone will fill it. Economy 101.

Don't use the stuff if you hate it so much, and if you're so damn smart you should be able to do whatever you want with a linux box. Maybe you won't be able to play the next Quake Super Death Match XXI, but aren't you tired of that shit anyway? There'll be other rewards, ultimately more satisfying. The best thing you could do as someone who's fed up with microsoft is slap a noob (red hat) distro on the back of your hdd and start making the transition. Hum, I don't like how this .net thing evolves, world's not ready for it yet; people bitching about privacy (including me), companies reluctant to depend on microsoft etc... It is the future of computing in my opinion but please let it not come from microsoft, I mean they are already sunked with the IE/Messenger lawsuit, they have to find new ways to survive (Xbox stuff...), to bound people to them.
Personnaly I like how the web is managed: W3C creating the standards, Mozilla being open source( if it wasn't for IE we would be all using it and it would be really better), I hope Linux could evolve in the same way (if all goes well I'm sure it will).
Hey there is limited stupid people you know...once everyone had a computer for some time they must begin to think a little don't you think ? Also, stupid people (I mean the masses) don't like to buy software so open-source might get popular if it gets good enough, and this .net thing won't work (Microsoft always wants to rip off people, but it doesn't work all the time, look how the xbox fucked up in europe).

I really agree with what dextro said in his massive post. I also agree with most of what colossus is saying, however...

It's all fine and dandy that everyone who is pissed off at microsoft should go and use an open source os. I wouldn't mind it myself. But therein lies the problem. Most of the open source OSes require an intimate knowledge of some programming language or another to operate at a decent level. Most of them have a fairly steep learning curve, and most of them have little software support. yes, colossus, enon101 will tell us that >demand = >supply, but with so many of the mass public who don't know anything about computers buying into the boxes at Best Buy, Compusa, Circuit City, Wally World, and all those other stores, there will never be enough of "us" to create that demand.

I consider myself fairly computer savvy. I know several computer languages fairly well (including VB, VC++, Java, etc.), but Windows is there, windows is shoved down our throats everyday of every year and has been for the past 7 years. The fact that it is there and (hands down) Microsoft has THE best PR dept in the industry has created the supply and brainwashed the public into creating the demand, hence there is any piece of software available to do anything you want for a windows box. granted, because of the limitations of the os, it is not the fastest or greatest box to be doing digital video editing, serious CAD work, music production, or serious graphic arts, but you can do it.

And it is idiot proof. You can customize, you can hack virtually any aspect of the computer with any of 20 resource hackers, with over 100 websites that tell you how.

i have accepted BSODs, Fatal Exceptions, and random lockups in the past and moved on. Of course they piss me off and they are very inconvenient (just when you're going for the floppy icon), but they were a part of working with windows. My Win2k box has crashed 3 times in 2 years; kudos to microsoft for addressing the issue with random lockups and making the kernel more recoverable from errors that in previous distros would have been a reboot.

But piss on 'em if they think we will pay to use their os. That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. I'll use windows because i know it, because i am comfortable getting around in it, and it has proven to be easy to use, easy to maintain, and i have no reason to switch to somehting with little or no software support.

But if they make me pay for something that is necessary for the comp to work, fuck 'em; i'll switch to linux and learn how to use it with more vigor than anything i have ever attempted on a windows box before.

just my two cents.

Oh and by the way, my sig seems so appropriately addressed to microsoft in this context.

microsoft, the mean green-guzzling machine. The only goals microsoft have set for themselves is cash. Dollar here, dollar there. Nothing else. They will skimp on whatever they can to make themselves richer. Monopolize on the market (as they do now) to wrench power away from fledgling companies, ADD bugs to their programs to FORCE people to update (then, dare I say, charge for the updates?) and things can, and will only get worse from there. They will attempt full control.

Let me put it this way.. Slowly, the world has been moving in a radical direction. Computers control everything. Airplanes (flight patterns, landings, etc.), travel (traffic lights, crosswalk lights, radar tested speed), information (need I say more on this one?), money (internet banking, 'wiring' cash), communication (phone stations), power (power stations), television (cable, digital cable, and satellite providers) and countless other aspects of daily life. With microsoft pushing their OS into every possible aspect of computer like a deranged rapist strangling a little girl (windows embedded, windows 64 bit, windows home and professional editions, server versions, etc.) the MS OS's will soon be running the greater percentage of all the systems and make this world tick and turn while you do your work (on a computer) and get your paycheck (calculated by a computer) and sleep, only to be awoken the next day by your clock. (another computer, but I'd really like to see MS make a clock OS, hehe). Anyway, with MS running all these computers, if they do go along with their .net idea, and cause all these people to pay monthly and store information on a remote MS server, who knows what kind of information they will be transferring from your PERSONAL computer to their server every single day that you turn your box on? And with such expansion, and control over every ones social security numbers, bank account numbers, passwords for every possible thing you can think of, and any other personal and important id type numbers available, they will have complete control over your life. Their motto will soon become, "If you dont use Microsoft, you have nothing." because that is how things *could* be if they are allowed to gain that kind of power. They could overrun the government with their millions of MS servers full the world's personal information.

Unless a large body of people can trump on these 'average joes' miniscule brains and knock some sort of sense into them, microsoft will only become closer and closer to fulfilling its dream, of not only wealth, but power. And with monopolistic power, comes only hardship. As far fetched as this may seem, I truly think MS is the kind of company capable of such a horrific thing. (as much as a bastard as he is, and as much as I'd like to take a shot gun to his forehead, I commend bill gates for being such a genius. He alone figured out how to craft a monopoly from nothing. Hes like a new age computer hitler, rallying the forces of CPU's to his side)

If the government has anything to fear, it is not terrorism, it is not foreign countries with atomic weapons. But it is monopolistic companies like MS.. a war that must be fought on america's own soil, by its own people.

Just one point.
Mac OS is NOT more stable than Win 2k.
Unpredictable lock-ups are as much part of the Professional Mac trade as they are in Windows.

OSX might be, but that's Unix and at the moment there isn't enough software available that exploits it for most professional users to upgrade.
