Well, considering I am somewhat the minority in the Desktop Resolution category (3200x1200), I like to find good 1600x1200 wallpapers...but on most sites that is hard to accomplish. I'd like it if you implemented, for your wallpaper sections, a Resolution sort. I know the current wallpapers don't have a Res. variable, so it would be time consuming (unless some nifty scripts were written), but this would be a feature that I think all could benefit from...
phredphish - thats a good idea (and wow, thats quite the res)
Plastic - as I said in the welcome post, most of the delay was due to money/server problems. Also, everything was recoded from scratch specifically designed to be flexible, so now that we are launched, we can do what the community wants. I'm not sure where you heard there was a company behind this, yes we incorporated for obvious reasons, but no "company".
Plasitc - yup, I actually did that already, we just weren't able to implement it for launch =) I just reminded revird (who has been busy keeping server alive), so it should be up soon
Plastic: I'm happy someone else thinks so... It's the same, and even less. The only new thing I can see is the ability to minimize boxes, and a very weird (or untraditional) url parameters ("...customize.org/forum/295") now, things that are obviously missing: 1. A list of all skins by a user in their user page (with no. of comments, ratings, etc.) 2. chater 3. (most important) being able too zoom on wallpaper 4. replace "daily screenshot" with "daily something". skin\wallpaper\screenshot.
Yeah, I'd like to see those things Kobi mentioned too.
And in fact, using the groovy parameter system custo has is actually technically a lot better, as using ampersands in hrefs is actually invalid html :)
1) Instead of downloading when you click on the image, have it bring you to the FULL image. Cuz in the LiteStep section you cant get a feel for the whole theme when you look at this smaller picture. You already have a download link, but no full image link.
2) Have a way to view all your uploads (which im sure is on its way in the manage uploads section)
3) Have a way to view others work, by searching for their name. If you go to their profile you can see all the peices they have done.
Increase the width of the center collumn. It's just kinda...small.
Poetry section, durnit. I love writing poetry.
Maybe widen the right collumn too. The titles are kinda cut off.
ShoutBox.
User skin list.
Daily Submition or something. Make this random. Or have a random submition and a staff pick.
Possibly have color sorting on the wallpapers? I like to look for blue wallpapers a lot, and it's hard surfing through 1000s of papers on a dialup connection just for a good blue one. This would probably require waaaaay too much coding, though.
Dust: all of the stuff you reqested about the layout of the site.... Once the "Skin Builder" for Custo is complete, you will be able to make your own layout.... column widths however you want.... the column widths are set by the person who designed the layout. in this case, bagpuss... Color sorting on the wallpapers.... I like that idea, but don't know how easy it would be to do.... I'm sure Revird will read this thread and give an answer...
for some reason with any skin, while you are viewing a profile. the text links to a persons email or homepage are barely visible, they have the same text color as the non link text and there is no underline, only when hovering. so its kinda hard to see what is a link and what is not.
I think you should also have a section for digital pictues that users took, due to the increasing popularity of digital cameras.
Also, that in that secrion you could browse / see info on image by "User", "Manufacturer", "Camera model", "Megapixel", "Location and time", "Resolution" and "User comments". As well as letting users post reviews about them. I think this is one of the most important suggestions over here. I bet I'm not the only one with a digicam over here. Besides, some people who surfed here on the passed didn't see the site is up again.
put a link to the software company's site in the list of skins for it... sometimes I'll go "What the heck is this?" and there's no way for me to easily retirieve it.
Id like to see an area in the profiles set up so that users can set a message board sig. Why you may ask. Because sig's are entertaining and many people (myself included) are either too lazy or are worried about getting a post in quick to type their sig every time they post. Justa thought:)
How about sections for skinnable applications from other platforms besides the Windows OS? There are some excellent customisable programs on the Mac OS, BeOS and Unix based operating environments. Examples include: *FreeAMP *Maccast *Cabrio *GKrellem *Sound Jam *GqMPEG *Most of the X Windowing System window managers (enlightenment, sawmill, blackbox et al)
I havent read all of the other suggestions but how about a stock photo section. All of the artists here could then share the photos that they have taken and give others a headstart opn their next wallpaper.
I personally think a zoom feature on wallpapers is a waste of bandwidth... but that's a personal opinion... but a zoom feature for themes isn't a bad idea...
I don't want customize to turn into another slow ass deviantart/deskmod-like site. Loading graphics needlessly is a big reason why those sites are so slow (ie custom graphics in signatures etc.)
also, someone mentioned making the middle column bigger: I think that's a good idea, but it would have to be based on a percentage scale instead of a fixed scale. Since right now it fits perfectly on 800x600
I would suggest a more user friendly and categorized message board, with sections and such. This current style will get old fast and become a hinderance once the population grows over here. IMHO of course. It's going to be difficult reading over a thousand responses to a single thread called "suggestions anyone" if you catch my drift. ;]
doodle, you may need to be more precise in your posting. The middle needs to be precentage scale, but not the two sides, or they will become too big on big enough browser window width and too small on small enough browser window width.
1) Daily Deviation equivalent. 2) More room for submitted artwork to stay on the front page. (Maybe even a link dedicated to just displaying the last 100 works or something). 3) Subheading for Wallpapers...(abstraked, 3d) 4) A 3D art section that wouldn't necessarily be limited to wallpaper resolutions.
jujube: ah thanks for correcting that, I forgot to mention it.
gear: it would be a waste of bandwidth to implement a zooming feature just befcause a screen shot is a bit too small, who cares. The screen shot is supposed to give you an idea of what the downloadable product looks like. And if you think you might want it, then you download it. At least that was my understanding of the concept. But I guess alot of you deviantart people are used to just zooming in on something instead of downloading it... I dunno, I personally think it's a waste of bandwidth and would only slow the site down
I think of this site as more of a desktop 'customization' website. I think incorporating traditional art and poetry will distract from that. When I come here, I'm like "ok what can i get to enhance my PC?" Not so much, "Ohh, I wonder what type of 3D logo bobby created today." Know what I mean? :)
I`d really like to see a Quintessential Player section. I like it very much, and I`m just designing for it my first skin ever. It might be, that you didn`t hear anything about it, well it`s the sequel of Quintesential CD, but it supports now much more formats, most importantly mp3.
It be cool if the latest additions stayed all day like before, instead of being pushed off after so many are submitted. Somtimes stuff is submitted and I don't even get a chance to see it...
how come when you go to download a wallpaper it saves as a untitled bitmap instead of the original name.jpg ?
yeah this is a browser thing.. to actually save the image (using its original name) and not show it in the browser, just right click from the details page and choose "Save Target As...".
I'm new here so I may be overlooking something that allows me to do this, but I'd like to have the display for each section/skin/theme to start with the newest skins, as opposed to the highest rated. While the higher rated submissions do deserve the attention, I get the feeling that some visitors to the site browse the highest rated stuff and never bother to look at the new stuff...
well roshi, the problem is that when you're dealing with a skin database this large, you have to have some way to sort it for viewing. that happens to be the default, but you can sort in other manners as well.
- allow for multiple files (resolutions) to be uploaded for each wallpaper, and force them to be in a graphics file format - opening zips is annoying
- make the latest additions list longer (30-50 skins maybe) and add another list of the top rated/downloaded new additions of the last week or 2 to the main page (the best recent skins)
- allow people to list id's of the skins they used when they submit a screenshot, and link to the skins used from the screenshot page, and vise-versa (link to screenshots from the skin details page).. would make finding skins that "match" easier
- it would be cool if skins that are part of a skins suite could be grouped together, so if you're viewing one of the skins you can see the other apps it's available for, suites could be reviewed/rated as a whole, you could save space in the new additions by listing the suite only once with a row of multiple icons linking to the individual skins, and the suite name linking to a screenshot page of all the skins together & links to them all
- in preferences or whatever have a check list of skinnable apps used, and have an option to link to only those areas in the nav bar, and/or to show only those skin types in the latest additions list, you could also use this list to suggest "compatible" skin suites
- have a page with a bunch of top 10 lists, like top downloaded skins, highest rated skin designers, top contributing skin designers, users with the most skin reviews, users with the most message board posts. then if you're on any of the lists you get a icon next to your name that proves how leet you are :)
How about making line breaks work when a review is displayed ?
I did a point-by-point breakdown of a wallpaper, ending each line with the enter key. In the "update review" box it looks like it should, but on the main display, there's not a line-break in sight.
Pod: that's true, but wouldn't it be possible to make it a preference for users with accounts? do it with cookies or something? just, a sortmode sort of thing? I dunno. It was just an idea. I just like looking at the new work coming through.
Man... I should read the whole thing, but here is my two cents in one minute. The only reason I'm coming to custo is so that I can find skins, info, old ver, etc. of dead programs. If you take it out completely, for me (and maybe me alone) that will suck. If you put a place for dead apps, that would be fine. Demote them after skins are no longer made and the app is no longer developed. Keep a copy or two o site so that we can use the thing to. That was one of the best things about custo. Reliable program links!!!!! Another thought would be to have the most recent and the last version available when possible. I usualy use every other upgrade, so for a new app, I don't have that lugsury. If it happens to be a bad release, having the old ver around helps (not that costo always had the most recent verions on site, but you know what I mean).
the last news item was referring to the new app skinmem...it's been pushed off the bottom of the page...it would be nice to be able to see previous news items for reference purposes, comments, etc...
