good news! i lost all my data last nite...i have some of my older files on a cd some where... and alot of my apps on other computers. but what is the best way to back up your computer? cd's on a regular basis or what? my dad lab has a hard drive that backs up any changes every couple of hours which is nice....but i don't have one. what do you guys think?

yeah i tend to backup any new files onto cds whenever i think its neccessary. its a cheap form of backup but if you have alot of data (like 20 gigs and up) it really would make sense to use another hard drive for backup purposes. it sounds like you dont have that much on your hard drive so i'd say stick to cds.

Use an old HD on 2 gigs or something for backups, works nicely. CDs arent bad either. ZIP disks work fine as well, so do tapes, etc. there'æs no end to the possibilities

i've got a second HD where all my important stuff gets dumped every so often, but this method still leaves you open to viral attack on your data... and I've yet to meet a burned CD that i feel safe trusting with anything important

You can pick up old tape drives pretty cheap, but media can be expensive. I think writing to dvds is a good way to go, or back up with ghost and save the image in several locs, some off your machine.

Since your on a Mac anything you do will probably end up costing a little more...

hmn ... DVD´s isn´t that too expensive? i mean here in germany a dvd-burner costs about hmn let me think 2 or more hundred euro´s (just the same as a dollar i think or not?). so i am as a average student can buy one. but a back up? i am lucky to have a friend near by ... he wants my work every month or second month so there´s no need to backup. if i lost something or my pc crashed i will format and get my files from the neighborhood... that´s all. so just find a neighbour you can trust and ... :P no i think a second hard-drive with 10GBytes would be cool...

i archive onto cd's as i go. granted, i only archive when i'm in dire need of space (i.e. when i have less than a gig left) so if my hdd's crashed, i'd be SOL of 100 gigs of movies/music/games/apps.

HAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!

HAHAHA.

Ha.

Now that that's out of my system, just use Easy CD creators backup gizmo. When its all fixed, go buy another hard drive and put your important stuff in that. Ya know, just incase.

Cant you get those interchangeable HDD? You can pull em out easily and keep them away from your computer.

Trouble is, you guys will only lose them.

^.^() well, storing things on a DVD R-RW, i think, would be your best chance... it's like having your entire computer on a cd... easy to back up
