Its what brought me to post on the board, maybe this will draw RxO out again :) Wheres esperii?
Pod179 (2:39:39 AM): what are you getting at? miriku kami (2:40:02 AM): point is, it will not launch off with new energy Pod179 (2:40:30 AM): right. but the existing energy that the object has will still be effecting it Pod179 (2:40:42 AM): ie, it will continue spinning while the earth does not miriku kami (2:41:32 AM): gravity pulls in miriku kami (2:41:42 AM): no input of energy miriku kami (2:41:47 AM): = hit ground and slide miriku kami (2:41:49 AM): = friction Pod179 (2:42:54 AM): okay, thats if the earth stops spinning miriku kami (2:43:01 AM): yes Pod179 (2:43:26 AM): what if the earth arrests all its motion in reference to the center of the universe (obviously theoretical, since we can't find that out) Pod179 (2:43:37 AM): it will have outward motion from the center miriku kami (2:44:03 AM): depends how fast earth is moving Pod179 (2:44:09 AM): okay true miriku kami (2:44:20 AM): faster then escape velocity or not miriku kami (2:44:41 AM): if so, we get flung to space, if not, we get to do a little parabola bounce miriku kami (2:44:51 AM): unless you're on the bad side of the planet Pod179 (2:47:00 AM): LOL Pod179 (2:47:01 AM): right. Pod179 (2:47:03 AM): funky miriku kami (2:47:33 AM): man, this aint physics, thats common sense Pod179 (2:47:44 AM): haha. Pod179 (2:47:45 AM): right Pod179 (2:49:27 AM): damn, what about being on the 'sides' of earth in terms of the motion? Pod179 (2:49:31 AM): you'd be flung sideways and up miriku kami (2:49:45 AM): just changes parabola Pod179 (2:50:12 AM): yeah thats true. Pod179 (2:50:17 AM): wow that'd be weird.
So in retrospect if the earth stopped spinning, we woudlnt' be flung off the planet, however if its movement in space was arrested, we would.
I thnk that if the world stopped rotating we would fly off because its moving at what like 25000 MPH and to have a sudden stop would hurl everything at 25000 MPH.
Lol. If the earth stop spinning, gravity will pull us harder, but we won't be flung anywhere. The gravity will pull us even harder because there won't be the centrifuge effect...

True, i was thinking about that too. For some reason i was trying to figure out how spinning could create a gravity on earth, i was stupmed, now i realize the spinning lessens the force.
Actually, I dont think the force of gravity would be strong enuff to keep you down. Law of motion. Something in motion will want to stay in motion, unless acted upon by another force. Inertia. So, i think if it just suddenly stopped you would fly for a certain amount of time untill friction and gravity got the best of you. But also remember, if it suddenly stopped you would be hurled at faster than terminal velocity INSTANTLY, wether is up or sideways, therefore you would probably just disinegrate or something. So you wouldnt just stay on earth. I do agree you would fly up do to the cyntripital force.
You need to take relativity into account, Our motion interms of the earth is 0, well unless your walkinga round or something :P airplanes might have some probelms. But since our motion interms of earth is 0 nothing happens to us as the earth slows down we slow down too.
Yeah, but im not saying slowly slowing, im saying sudden. If it slowly stopped, then yes, we too would slow and feel nothing, cept for the sun taking longer to set.
Morph: you gotta slow down before you stop :P If it's an abrupt slowing down or a gradual one is irrelivant. We are effectively -part- of earth. i think, anyway.
If the speed of light is indeed relative and subject to flux, what are the ramifications to the theory of relativity and the foundations of quantum physics as a whole?
...I mean, uh, why do leaves change colors in the fall?
The Earth could be stopped suddenly by 2 huge interstellar forks being jabbed into the poles, thus not affecting us.
We would all be sent flying then because the speed difference is somewhere around 10,000 mph I think, far more than escape velocity.
What you have to bear in mind too is that the atmosphere spins too and would carry on afterwards causing 10,000mph winds destroying anything that was left!
Oh and leaves change colour because they introduce a chemical to suck the remaining energy back into the tree and the chemical is red. Apparently.

Your answers lie within Newtonian Physics and the works of Richard Feynman. Read the books "Six Easy Pieces" and "Six Not so Easy Pieces" by Feynman. Not only quite the genius but had the ability to make physics easy to understand to the average person. Definitely a good read for you Physics people :)
