why is there a mozilla browser and a phoenix browser? were they working halfway thru the mozilla and stoped and decided to work on a new one called phoenix or something?
It's actually a little more complicated than that.
Phoenix and Mozilla are actually quite separate. Phoenix is a browser that is based on gecko, the rendering engine that mozilla uses (sometimes confused with mozilla itself, it's from the mozilla project, but it is embedded in mozilla, the same as it is embedded in phoenix).
There are several such projects out there. There's one called Chimera which uses native MacOSX widgets and the gecko rendering engine and is an impressive browser. There's also galeon under Gnome which uses native Gnome widgets. There are several projects like this.
What makes phoenix a little bit different is that it uses XUL, the widget toolkit which mozilla uses. However, it aims to provide a much more efficient, streamlined, and customizable interface than Mozilla.
Essentially, Mozilla is a technology demo. It shows what can be done with the gecko rendering engine and XUL. Phoenix takes these two technologies, and pumps out a lean browser that leverages the power and speed of gecko (known to be one of the fastest and most correct HTML rendering engines available).
Mozilla is still very actively developed. However, most people who had been using mozilla as their primary web browser have since switched to Phoenix as it is, quite simply, a better browser. The rendering is identical, but the browser itself functions much better.
I hope this clears up some stuff about Phoenix for everyone. Download it and try it out, I guarantee the first time you "click" with your mousewheel on a link and it opens up in a new tab, you'll be hooked. :)
...either that or when you browse to any web site you want with NO unrequested popups EVER. You can also turn off the ability for a page to resize or move your browser window. The best part though, is though it stops unrequested popups, requested popups work as intended, and you can "whitelist" sites so that sites which open unrequested popups as part of their functionality still work properly.
phoenix is really just a stripped down mozilla. mozilla is like netscape with built in email, irc client, etc. phoenx is just a browser, thusly is much faster. both nice but if u dont use the extra features of mozilla phoenix is the way to go.
i want to give phoenix a try.. if only i can figure out how to download it.. i tried once before but with all the freaking links that lead you to no where else but more documentation.. i got tired of reading and said forget it.
also, to clarify (mondaypickle, pay attention). Phoenix IS NOT, repeat IS NOT, a stripped down version of Mozilla.
While it may look similar and uses the same rendering engine, the browser code itself was built from scratch separately from Mozilla code. Read the FAQ at the bottom of the Phoenix page.

Colossus72, Since we work with the AOL client on a daily basis and the AOL software uses IE thats what we use.. they tried to work with Nutscrape and it did'nt go over so well with the Compuserv members when they beta tested it to see if we could use it in the AOL client instead of the IE browser so thats why AOL is sticking to IE for now.
AOL's Interest in Netscape is that they own Netscape.
Unfortunately, they also have to think about customer response. Customers have responded fairly poorly to their attempts to use Mozilla in place of IE as the web browser.
I think when Mozilla achieves a point that it really does compete with IE, or if they perhaps wanted to use Phoenix, they would get much better customer response.
I can only describe it's stability as very impressive.
I have been using it as my primary browser (under windows and linux) since before version 0.1 came out. The current release code is 0.5, but you would believe it's 1.0 when you use it.
If you're a little more daring, you might want to try the latest nightly release. I usually keep up pretty well with those and they seem about as stable as the release code. The only problem you might run into is that every now and then a nightly will have a nasty bug that is usually fixed by the next day.
hmmm... friend of mine had me set up phoenix for her, but i found it not as good as many people say it is. For her needs, she should just use IE.
basically, i'm saying that the genereal public should stick to simple, but those who use phoenix for special perpouses, then go ahead, it's great if you need it for specific reasons

Pianostring, that sounds about as uninformed as any comment I've ever heard.
What can you do with IE that you can't do with Phoenix? In fact, what can you do in IE that you can't do FASTER and BETTER with phoenix.
Complain all you want about the lack of IE6 specific stuff like rendering colored scrollbars and stuff, but scrollbars are part of your OS widget set. Next thing you know, the site will be able to change the look of your toolbar, do you want that?
All I'm saying is give Phoenix a shot. I can't imagine why you would think that IE is more "simple" than Phoenix. It just doesn't make sense.
I got Phoenix after reading all this to try it out but I can't seem to customise the toolbars, every time I try it works until I restart it (or open a new window) then I've only got about 2 buttons, all the rest disappear. I created my own profile because I thought that might be the problem but it's no different.
Any ideas why? I looked on the site but couldn't see any similar problems. I could use it without changing anything but that "Search" bar is really bugging me.
I did download the "latest nightly version" because it was the only thing I could find at the time leading to a file, but I checked it incase that's why I was having problems and it's version 0.5 apparently.
Ok I just replaced it with the "milestone" version 0.5 and it seems to work fine. Thanks.
Yeah, the version number in the nightlies still lists as 0.5.
I read about this last night shortly after your post, but for the last few nightlies, there has been a big bug in the customize toolbar code which makes the feature unusable.
Hopefully, this will be fixed in nightlies soon, and obviously it will be working correctly for 0.6
