Does anybody know how to make those random size bars that stretch out horizontally? Like on EndEffect or Arteye (http://www.arteye.com , on the main section, that background.)

open up any picture, use the 1 pixel vertical selection tool, ctrl-a, then ctrl-v like a million times and each time nudge it 1 pixel to the right. flatten image and there you have it.
oh btw if you make an image like this then make sure it's at least 50 pixels (yes even if all 50 vertical lines are the same) wide or it'll take so long to tile you'll see it.
actually when you do it that way by using the free transform, then yeah it usually look shitty, and I think thats what viper is talking about. Did you try it the other way by just cutting and pasting one after another?
How about you open a window the right height, and wide enough to give you some room to play in (maybe same width as height?). Start painting strokes of different colours into the window with the intention of making the middle column of pixels look nice. When you're done, take a 1-pixel wide column from the middle, paste it in a new (1px wide) window and try the resize width thing again.
That way you get a rough idea of what it will look like before you reduce it to 1 pixel ready for the stretch, so you should notice any odd pixels that would ruin it.
If you still get any ugly lines then get the line tool out and patch over them!
Don't know if it's too late but I was playing around with Dreamweaver to get back into web-page making so I made a short tutorial about this. The picture isn't fantastic but it's just so you get the idea.
its like a metal effect... make a white background.. add noise (monochrome).... and play with motion blur... do that till you see a section that you like...
