Well this is my first post but I would like to throw this out there... and I the only one who has been motivated to enlist b/c of teusday ? I mean something about that attack makes me want to be directly involved in the protection of the free world. I'm usally quite the coward but I'm motivated and I just wanted to know if I'm the only one.

Alright time for a brif reality check. Enlisting now will NOT most likely allow you to aid in the current dilema. There is after all at least 30 days of basic training and much much more if you want to get a position that will allow you to be involved.

In order to get directly involved in thes War on Terrorism. You would have to be somehow involved in aviation. Because lets face it, the days of massive ground strikes are over. Or you would have to go into some kind of special forces. The surgical precision extract/assasination manuvers most likely to be taken against small terrorist orginazations will require small covert teams, not a massive platoon of "grunts"

Bottom line is, we dont fight like we used to. Most of our war is in the skies, and that which is not is done by specialist teams.

There are some in my area worried about the draft. This too is utterly rediculous. You cant attack terrorists with a massive army, so what would be the point of drafting.

Bottom line is, I applaud whomever wants to join up and defend our people. Just make sure you realize that 95% of the people in our armed forces NOW will never see action in this conflict. So if your just joining up because you want to defend the people in a general sense, go for it. But if your joining up out of hatred and vengence oer this incedent. I fear you wont be able to help when and how you want to.

Just my 2 cents.

Darius it is most likely what we will see ground troops in this conflict. You cannot win a war buy bombing the hell out of a country. This has been proven time after time. Germany bombed the hell out of Britain but all that did was greaten their resolve. We also saw this in Desert Strom but in the end we still needed to use our ground forces. You also seem to forget we will not only be attacking the terrorists but also those who harbor them.

You are right though to enlist at this time would be almost pointless and the notion that the draft would be brought back into use is utterly ridicules.

Oh for sure we would need SOME ground forces. My point is though that in our new way of waging war, the amount of ground forces needed is signifficantly lessened due to our improved tech such as smart bombs and stealth tech.

Hell most of our high altitude/stealth bombers are actually in very little danger from most of these countries tech. Their is still risk but much less than that faced in WWII.

How it works now, and we have seen this in desert storm, We fly in demolish their capabilities and weapons with bombs and such, and then in come the ground troops to take prisoners and secure the sites.

Besides we dont do it like the germans did. We have a lil something called aim! We can take out specific targets and ensure success in a way that could only be accomplished with ground troops before.

My point is. This wont even be the same as the gulf war, as i seriously doubt we'll take on all the rouge nations at once. I rather think it would be more intelegent to have a series of small surgical strikes.

So yes ground troops will be needed for special ops missions and the securing maintaining ot taken territory. But ground war these days doesnt require the huge numbers it used to. It just not trench warfair anymore, and its hard to cram as many grunts into the urban jungles this will most likely play out in.

I just hope we fight smarter, not harder.

Wanting to fight back is admirable. The problem the US has here is who are you expecting to fight and where will you find them?

The terrorists responsible are cowards who attack and go into hiding somewhere. If they are ever found (not just who are they but where can they be found), I suspect a surgical airstrike will be used, not ground troops.

One hopes that the US won't blindly bomb some mid-east country on the hope or expectation the bastards will go down with the innocents. Palestinian reaction is reprehensible but that hardly makes them guilty of either the act or harbouring the guilty. Cool heads are needed.

I was very compelled to but I opted for less drastic measures for some of the reasons posted here. I'd rather be volunteering with money, labor, and anything else that I can.

I congratulate you on wanting to be involved in the war. You will do the country proud, but chances are you wont get to fight anyways. Great if you do.

How about if we just randomly bomb the whole middle east. I mean, we will just kill all off the responsible people, along with all the miserable people living there. I mean, think about it, the average person there makes $10 a month and lives in the worst conditions imagineale. We would be DOING them a FAVOR by killing them.

This would, of course, spawn more conflict, but oh well, we can start a kind of terrorism on our side saying you hurt us, we nuke you. This in turn will also cause nuclear winter and doomsday, but oh well.
