Michael Jordan is the best player to ever play and was still one of the better players in the league these last few years. Who cares how many times he retires. The man is a legend.
i have to agree with downtown. jordan is the best to ever play in my opinion. but since we cant compare them now to chamberlain or kareem, we cant prove either way so it doesnt matter.
as for the limelight, how could he possibly be trying to get more time in the spotlight? he has commercial deals with countless companies and he's got more money than you can shake a stick at. when you're at the top, there's no way to get any higher.
.: Customizing your OS is a big dill. It's a really big dill. You should relish it. :.
I disagree for two reasons. Firstly, sure, Jordan was an offensive powerhouse, and could *probably* outshoot Chamberlain in his prime. But (steals obviously aside) MJ is an average defender. I think Chamberlain especially was more well rounded.
Secondly, Jordan was at his best when the Bulls were at their best. It would have been easy for almost anyone to run up some fantastic numbers surrounded by a team which dominated the NBA for years.
I don't think there's any way you can say, all things considered, that he alone is the best to play the game. I'll give you the best offensive player, but there's more to the game than scoring 40 points every night.
Just my $0.02.

he did do more than average 30.2 points a game over his career..he was voted defensive player of the year and mvp in 88...and was voted to the all nba defensive team eight times..but i guess it doesnt matter theres several jordan haters out there so theres no point in trying to convince you..we all have our opinions so its casual..
Jordan was a mental powerhouse on the court above everything else. Once you reach a treshhold, it's not about physical ability or talent alone, it's how you situationally employ it. And the ease with which you do it. That's why his offensive game looked effortless.
It's always easier to spot a player which is a cut above the rest in a mediocre team. It's another thing to constantly prove your self amidst a roster of championship players. Not to mention all the countless opponents who would love to get a piece of you night after night.
He gets A+ in my books on consistency alone, its just an added bonus in the way he executes it.
He's a great Basketball player but a regular fuck up in real life. He actually doesnt have as much money as you think, what with paying off his wife and his gambling addiction. Thats why he keeps coming back...more money :\ and really he hasnt gotten much from Nike lately cause his shoes werent really selling but whatever. He is a great basketball player and no one can ever say he wasnt, but that doesnt make him a good person.
Penis is as a Penis does, so give my Penis a great big hug
But Uh-oh, what did I do???? Did I ((gasp)) criticize Michael Jordan?? ((gasp)) Oh my god, I never knew he has a place reserved at the "right hand of the Father." Is the man a legend? Sure. Was he good? He was awesome. Is he finished? Yes. My criticism (I'm allowed to criticize) is based on the fact that there was a whole show when he announced it the first time, etc., etc., and the networks had to subject us to endless documentaries and biographies about his life, i.e., "Jordan: the man and the legend" or whatever the fuck they were . . . and it was bascially a pretty predictable sportscaster circle-jerk, talking breathlessly about how good he was, and how we'll all miss him, and how all the inner-city kids were inspired by him. Fine. So you think it's all over, he bowed out nicely, he got the fanfare he deserved.
But why the comeback?? Ahhh, well, he has more shit to sell the public. When he retires again, he'll get more exposure, we'll be reminded of how great he was and 16 year olds all over the country will once again line up at the malls to buy more Jordan shit. Welcome to the greatest business on earth. Is he still great? Sure. Have we had our fill? Yep. Does anyone give a shit anymore? Probably not. Well, some of us still do. Is Jordan above criicism/scrutiny/questioning? NO. NO ONE IS. Not Jesus, not your mother, not me, not the admins of this site. FrostedFlames, maybe when you get that whole 16-year old puberty thing over and done with you'll understand what it is to think for yourself.
:-)
Jordan does not save lives, he does not perform a necessarly public/civil service, he hasn't done anything for you lately like pay your mortgage or help finance a car for you, he hasn't sat down with you to listen to your problems and give you advice, he hasn't even . . . . ready for this: with all his multi mutli millions, has he ever decided to treat the fans to a free game? In which he would pay for all tickets sold? Just one night . . . sound interesting? Well, it would have been nice, what with all the love and adoration he's showered with. What would it cost? A quarter-million, maybe . . . a negligible amount. Yeah, it would inovolve an administrative hassle, but it can be done. Oh but you say, "LTD, who does that?? That's crazy!" Can it be done? Yes, anything can be done. If he paid for your ticket would you go? See what I mean?
His paycheck is mostly YOUR money, after all - right? The Jordan shoes YOU buy, the game tickets YOU pay for, the merchandise YOU purchase.
I never said I hated Jordan, I consider him one of the all-time greats. I just think a number of players were as good or better, and calling him the best there ever was is unfounded. End of story.
As far as Jordan making the all-defensive team, I hear that one brought up a lot. The all-defensive team wasn't created until 1969, so Bill Russell for instance only played one (and retired the same year), Walt Frazier only played in seven (it was created three years in to his career), Wilt Chamberlain only played in two, etc. It didn't exist when many of the greats played.
And you've also got to remember that steals and blocks weren't even recorded as statistics until AFTER Wilt Chamberlain had retired.
In a game that's been graced with players like Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and hell, even Magic Johnson... you can't rightly say anyone was THE best.
Jordan is the king, but the best b-ball you could ever see was during the eighties (the best time for b-ball, period.) Bird and Magic and their respective teams going hell bent, Moses Malone was cooking, and the Pistonsinvented bad boy play. Dominique and Jordan were proving men could fly. Great times. I miss them. The showboating and posers today turn me off.
Status, if you're playing for a dynasty such as the bulls, the only way your teammates could help out your numbers is in the assists category. Rebounds, steals, points (maybe), blocks, turnovers, fouls, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, 3-pointers, 3-point percentage... these are all completely isolated from how good your teams is. And if anything, playing for a great team would decrease your playing time, and the amount of time the ball's in your hands, which made it tougher for jordan to rack up the points he had.
LTD: Minimize your thoughts and stop repeating yourself and others. No one cares about what you have to say anymore because they are sick of reading your essays. Its annoying as hell.
"Secondly, Jordan was at his best when the Bulls were at their best. It would have been easy for almost anyone to run up some fantastic numbers surrounded by a team which dominated the NBA for years." - status
The Bulls dominated because of Jordan. How well did the bulls do for those couple years Jordan was gone?
In 1993 (the year he left), they only lost two more games than they had in 1992. When Magic Johnson and Larry Bird left (respectively), their teams slipped 15 games the next year. When Chamberlain left the Lakers, the difference was 13 games, and when Oscar Robertson left the Bucks, the difference was 21!
'94 and '95 saw a team that was poor because of soaring egos, a lack of teamwork, and poor coaching. Not because they lost their forward guard.
And actually, Scottie Pippen (and I think Horace Grant as well) shot BETTER after Jordan left. Pippen set some team records in 94 and 95. So apparently Jordan wasn't 'making' the Bulls after all...
And please don't take my quotes out of context.

Colossus, they played the exact same game. It's not like baseball where balls were loaded, park sizes fluxuated, certain ethnic groups were handicapped, etc.
I don't think it was a different era at all. They just never played head to head.
You just like comparing stuff to cars. :P
And just for the record, even with your bad analogy, I still feel vindicated by your post: Find me a car enthusiast who'll tell you a 2003 Corvette is superior to a '66. :P
