you gotta crawl before you can walk man, try to create every day shapes, objects and whatnot. Learn what the tools do. The rest will just come gradually.

My best advice:

open it up, make a pot of coffee, think and do.

Find a simple cartoon or something to trace over on a different layer just to get used to the vector tools, then try to copy another simple cartoon drawing just from sight. Then you'll probably know enough about what you you're capable of to choose where to go from there.
