Man, KaZaA is a pain in the @$$!!! There is so much spam and fake files and viruses, most of the time it's a waste of money paying for your internet to download this junk.
You're obviously not very good at searching for stuff then, the only thing that affects me is fake files occasionally, and that's only if I'm searching for something very new. If you're picking up viruses then you're not using the minimum size filter and I dunno where you're getting spam from but I've not heard of anyone else getting it.
Basically if you're searching for something then you should set the filters accordingly and read the stats on the file. For example, decently encoded mp3's: Go to Music, set the Quality to "At least" and "128kbps", when you find the files, a 128kbps file is roughly 1Mb/min, so something that should be around 4 mins will be around 4Mb, a 2Mb file will probably be corrupt.
Another example, the Matrix Reloaded trailer: Go to Video, set the minimum size to about 10Mb since even a DivX of it is likely to be over 15Mb, search for it and take it from the most common source (maximum users count) or nearest if you don't want that version (wrong filetype, etc)
I don't have any problems with viruses, fake files, or anything like that, because I don't really download what most people would fake. Mostly what I do is download music to try-before-I-can-buy, ya know? I'm currently sharing quite a collection of music and videos (Sifl & Olly, lots of jazz/rock, growing collection of Primus & Les Claypool).
I still have to install any AV software, it's just really not that big an issue with me, though, being an experienced computer user who's ruined his fair share of machines/installations in the past, and has hopefully learned. ;)
