iconphile or e-icons are all i can think of. like status said, use google.

or replacing your shell32.dll file and a few others

when the title is "newbie question" something tells me shell32 hacking isn't going to be something he's interested in.

IconCool freeware is your best bet IMO. Worth the money, or just get the demo.

As a general rule of thumb, we suggest looking for information on google before asking for it. It saves you waiting for our answer, and us rewriting information elsewhere. The message boards and #cusomize are more for last-ditch efforts to find info. :)

sorry, but I just didn't know what to search for...

status: If you seach for "icons", "replacing icons", or "changing icons" on google, you get innundated with crap about registry hacking or very specific message board threads about linux, so its pretty discouraging to the noob just looking for a simple program.

But you do raise a good point. Old message board threads and the people in #customize are always there to help.
