As some of you might know, I'm trying to dual-boot Win98 with WinXP. I decicded to get a second hard drive (slave drive) and throw Win98 onto that. The problem is, I'm told that I need to install Win98 FIRST, and then install XP. This is not an option for me. I will not uninstall/erase XP and star backing up my files. There must be a simpler way.
I heard something about dual-booting "after the fact", meaning you do not need to uninstall/erase XP. It sdidn't say too uch, other than to install Win98 on a separate partition, and then to use the XP CD to perform a repair and so on. Well, I don't know how to install Win98 through XP, because it refuses to do it. I just explored tthe Win98 CD and chose setup. Is there any other way?
Things I will not do:
1. Back up XP files, get rid of XP, install Win98 and then install XP. I have no patience for this.
2. I will not obtain a third hard drive or borrow a friend's hard drive for swapping/copying purposes. I just went through hell to get Win98, and I refuse to "get" any more things.
Try switching the drives and making 98 the primary one. 98 has to be first. M$ had a thing to write over a boot file to overwrite if there was another OS in place, and to try and force 98 to be the only OS. They got hit by a (anti-trust I believe) lawsuit and stopped doing it. You have to work arround that limitation of 98.
You could also install 98 and then XP on the other drive. Use the current master as a file drive. That accutally simplifies a lot of things when used well.
As far as I know though, if you only want to do it the simple, logical, should-a-been-the-right way... your screwed. M$ sucks like that. >;}
Hope this helps, or that I'm wrong about that tho.
I just unhooked my C drive with WinXP on it, and replaced it with my new drive. My comp booted my new drive and I installed Win98. Only thing is I have to swith hard drives when I want to use a different OS. No problem, 'cause I'll get drive mounts which should allow for easier swapping.
:-)

Duuuuude they got apps to do that for you, and you can do that from the bios. Go to www.shellcity.net and do a search for "Dual Boot" and there shold be pletty to get you going. There is an easier way to do this, man. You're making to much work for yourself.
There also is multi boot ones out there too. I'm going to possibly use one for 98/XP/Linux soon.
you can do that, but installing 98 first makes life more simple as xp will detect 98 on the system and configure the boot.ini file automatically making xp your primary boot and 98 your alternative if you choose not to upgrade. if you want to install 98 after xp you will have to manually edit the boot.ini file, which will be located on the root of your c: drive. also remember any partition formatted as NTFS under XP will not be viewable to 98, so if you need to access stuff from both systems make sure the partition is formatted using FAT32.

LTD: Dude, it's Red. You'll get carpel-tunnel's syndrom (sp) typing my name out all the time. 8) No prob man.
Btw, I know of a way to get 98 to read and write to NTFS, but I gotta find the link to how the guy did it. It kills the security of it though, and may require other obvious things like 98 being on a FAT32 driv partition.
Remember it's always best to have a partition for each OS, and not a bad idea to have one for the swap file.
eeewww...98 and XP :P oh well...i had it running for a while, but i had 98SE on it first, then added XP, I'm sure if you ran the 98 boot disk and the install from DOS (make sure the install dir is for your slave or partition) it should work. but then again...i don't like windows (but still have to use it :P) and i don't think windows likes me
I've decided to get drive mounts and just swap hard drives now and then. It only takes a few seconds and while there might be more convenient solutions, I can't be bothered to mess with system files and new software, etc.
I also plan to throw in an older Matrox (millenium?) 8mb PCI card into one of my PCI slots to work with Win98. The reason being, my Radeon 8500 128mb doesn't like to run older (1998) 2D games in proper colour depth. I don;t know if it's a Radeon problem, or an AGP-specific problem. Just to be on the safe side, I want the card to be PCI, directx compliant, and lower-end. I may have to remove my Radeon card, though, I don't know if two videocards, one in an AGP slot and the other in a PCI slot will cause conflicts.

I have, and the problem persists. XP compatilbity or not, with a Radeon 8500 card, runs ALL older 2D games in a lower colour depthpoorer quality than they were originally designed to run in. I don;t know why, it could be an AGP problem, it could be a Radeon-specific problem, etc. Either way, since I have an older OS installed, I might as well use older components, just to make sure. I'm not sure how the Matrox card willeract to my fairly new ECS K7S5A mobo, but I expect there should be no problems, since I'm putting a PCI card into a PCI slot.
