im looking to purchase a new video card in the near future. i wanted to know what your guys's thoughts were. which one should i get. im willing to spend probally 150 and not too much more. i would like to have the svid out and 128mb if possible. ive been looking at nVidia and ATI.
that is one that id like to get i think. opinions?
oh, this card will be used for gaming, (ex. battlefield 1942, c&c, etc.) displaying movies and such on my tv, and other gernal purposess. no real need for editing photos and video. any suggestions would great.
At this time, I do not recommend wasting your time, and money with the GeForce FX 5200 series. This is nothing more than a replacement for the GeForce4 MX cards, although it's not quite as crippled. Paying that much money for something that performs below a GeForce4 Ti4200 is simply not worth it. Look around and get GeForce4 Ti4400(or 600), it would be a better buy for $150. I am a Nvidia at heart, so take a look at ATi as well, because they make great products too. The ATi cards will show definite advantages when anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are used to any significant extent. Just my 2 cents.. :P

for gaming, you almost need the better ones. they are making the games so good that it would be a waste of time and money to use any thing less than a ATI 9700 or GeForce 4 Ti 4600.
if it were me i would wait and save for the brand new cards that are out and/or that are coming out.
Lets keep in mind he is asking for a video card for $150, not the best card on the market(new thread, and would never end). Now if you could buy a 9800 Pro for $150, I would like to know(lol). He also said for BF1942, C&C, and TV out. Which a Ti4600 would be prefect for, imo.

if you want value and performance go with the radeon 9700. since all the new stuff's coming out, prices on the card are going way way down, and it can still run everything very very nicely. unreal 2003 at 1600x1200 all settings max and still runs @ 30+fps booyah!
ok, lets get back on track here. Will the geForce FX 5200 128mb card be adaquate for my useage? youve got to imagine this, i have used my geforce 2 mx 200 for queit a while.
(im not looking to run games that wont come out for two years yet) i dont buy alot of games. the main usage would come from movies and other media files.
I'm quite happily running Quake 3 at 1152x864, full quality settings on an Athlon 850 and GeForce4(460MX) at about 75fps, so I'd say that would do you fine. Oh and I'd take what people say about the MX's with a pinch of salt.
the 5200 Ultra is actually a pretty decent card for mild-heavy gaming, just dont expect to be playing Doom3 or HalfLife 2 with max detail anytime soon. If i were you, i'd take that $150 and set it aside, and little by little drop $15 or $20 into it each week and wait for the R1000 or the GF FX 5900 Ultra, which supposedly pulls close to 100 fps in Doom3 alpha (so i hear/read)
Don't feel bad, im still running my GF2ti =) I can play pretty much any game at 1024x768 4xanistrophic just fine, even UT2k3 (with the mouselag turned off)
: Nothing's better than takin a dump and checkin out some uber hardware...well...hacking into microsoft while dropping off the Cosby's might be better :
I wouldn't recommend the 5200. It is just the new low-end card. Don't get fooled by the '5200' that just means it's a GeForce FX that is severly crippled. The 4200 is by far the better card. I live in Australia so i'm not sure of the prices there but, if you can get a 4600 for only a little more than a 4200 then by all means go for it. The I've O/C a 4200 to above 4600 speeds and it was fine so the 4600 should have some headroom. To ignore all the crap i just said, 5200 = poo, 4200 = cheap performance, 4600 = very resonable.
ridgeburner: i'm still running a gf2ti too! it's the shit.. (that or shit, i haven't decided) but it's slowing up.. need to o/c to make bf1942 run semi nice on 800x600 and i think 16bit colours.
ohh and like ridgeburner said, i'd hold out for a few months. a whole bunch of new cards is being released which means price drops for everything else. save the 150.. get some more and then you'll have more to spend on better.

You may want to consider getting a card that supports dual monitors. I wish that my current setup supported it. It would be much nicer with 2 NEC lcd1760v's instead.
