It bothers me that there are people (trolls) who go around rating other people's subs leaving low remarks about things that they themselves have no real life experience in making!
Apart from using other people's work in thier over abundance of screenshots subs, they really don't contribute anything but frustration to others in the community.
You guys doing it know who you are and even though I would love to call out names.. I won't for now but this is a fair warning for you guys to stop it now and contribute equally with your own walls, skins and themes for other's to use and rate.

while i don't agree that it matters whether or not you submit walls/skins, there is obviously a certain amount of tact to be employed when you think someone else's work is subpar.

one of our communities artists just msged me to ask me some questions about customizing miranda, because he doesnt have much experiance with reshacking and such. id say thats contributing, but in a different way. customize.org isnt simply an art site, but a customization site.
id really like to submit my personal work here, but my style of digital art would totally get bashed at custo, thats why i dont contribute to the site. i couldnt take the harsh reviews.
anyways, i leave fair reviews based on a user level which is just as important to the feed back an artist recieves as reviews from other artists.
just speaking my mind and my opinions here... please refrain from bashing me or calling me out as a troll for doing so.
I think the logic in this is seriously flawed. I don't really care if somebody submits walls or not when they rate mine, good or bad. You don't have to make something to rate it. Screenshot people have every right to rate a skin or wallpaper that they would use.
Let's take ere.mite as an example. He submits screenshots - pretty good examples of customization, if you ask me. He uses Winamp, he uses wallpapers, and so on. Just because he doesn't submit them doesn't mean he can't comment of them, because people who avidly customize and try different things (like ere.mite) need to be critical of things like that. I think the definition of "troll" is somebody who submits and contributes nothing. There are very few people here who fall into that category. If you're going to do that, there's really no reason to even register.
Ere.mite, you may as well try submitting your work - or at least post it on the forum to get some feedback. I'm not a very good artist by any means, and I mostly aim to improve my work here. It's not a job, it's just a hobby, but I still want to do my best. I've started with some crappy things in the forum, and improved them. Nobody (worthwhile, anyway) will come out and say that you suck. We try to help. I do especially, because lately I've been running all my stuff through the forums first to work on it.
I dont think Max meant that if you dont make wallpapers you shouldnt criticize wallpapers... I think he just meant that dont bash and flame someone for trying to contribue when you arent a contributor.
(I think thats more of what he meant)
Because if he meant what some of you are understanding it as... then I shouldnt be rating wallpapers since I dont create any (at least not under this name) and thats not it at all.
Max, i understood you, but no matter what you do or say, theres always gonna be trolls. its like that in everyday life, assholes are gonna be assholes. and yes, it sucks that a great submission gets fucked up by some trolls low review, but at the end of the day, the real people at custo know whats good and whats not with or without the final score.
I misunderstood somewhat, and I apologize. Like MD just said, we're always going to have trolls. I don't follow screenshots much, so I'm not sure if people who submit screens frequently bash other people's work. I think we can all agree that bashing other people's work is low and unnecessary, regardless of who you are.
Frosted emailed me the other day and warned me from heading down troll road. The way I see it, I was just calling a stick a stick. If an upload is patently shite, then why not just come out and say it? If you make encouraging noises then they'll just go and make more really bad stuff. I mean, isn't this the site where the admins asked people to think twice before uploading because custo was awash in second-rate crap? So now we're supposed to forget that and make supportive comments about sub-standard shit that a spastic two year old could do?
I think a lot of the problem is the international nature of the site. I think we Brits are a lot more sarcastic about stuff (Simon Cowell anyone?) and it doesn't always 'carry' well with you yanks. Ah well, ban me if you want, hit me with a big stick, call me a troll if it makes you happy, it doesn't alter the fact that people upload crap with no redeeming qualities.
There's a difference between knocking a genuinely bad piece (which will likely be deleted anyway) and just wandering around the site saying that everything sucks ass.
But either way, comments like "it sucks" or "it's gay" really just don't have any place. If something is that bad, just don't comment on it, or just say something like "not really useful to anyone serious about customizing their desktops" and maybe give some reasons....even if maybe the reason is "it's just too damn ugly"
Put some time and thought into your comments, don't just leave a quick troll and move on.
It is everywhere, but it's not overly prominent. I think I've learned to just filter out the idiot comments and look for the real ones. I think ds put it best - even if it does suck, put it in useful terms. Look at hermik's reviews for good useful criticism. He might give you a low score, but he'll tell you why. It's constructive. When you respond to somebody's first submission with "it shows" you're just making a fool of yourself.
I wouldn't be so sure. I remember the episode with hash a while back (where you were both at fault) but otherwise I can't remember any troll ratings. Trolls aren't so prominent individually, but they have strength in numbers. It's like the orc army in LOTR.
err, please direct me to some of these warnings. I recall none recently. I do admit to making the odd troll review, but as RepoMonkey states, we brits are sarcastic creatures.
other than this thread obviously. if this thread was about my recent comments on vector walls, axii's in particular, I felt they were constructive, even if a little harsh. also my post in this thread of "hi fans" was a joke, in case you didn't realise. I'm not one of these people who goes around giving very low ratings, and I try to generally being constructive. while I am occasionally brusque, I feel most are fair. however, if you wish to ban my account, that is your choice and there's little I can do about it. like repomonkey, I feel that not making walls personally doesn't mean I can't critique; sure, we all like to critcize things like blank winamp skins and jokingly give them 100 ratings, that to me seems different. perhaps the admins like the site so much they don't like to see the tone lowered with mockery.
You've been warned by myself and other admins in the past nu|L, you can basically thumb through a good deal of reviews starting from a year and a half back and see them yourself.
Don't act surprised, own up to your actions and be a man about it. Seeing as you are back with a new name, I think it's wise for you to turn a new leaf and be a good guy starting from now.
Every snowflake in an avalanche pleads not guilty.
If something sucks it sucks its that simple explaining why dosn't always need to be done although its much more helpfull to the artist to explain. the point in a review is to express your opinion, if you think the artist was a flaming homosexual who eats poo for making that peice then so be it.
Is this the same Frosted who in another thread on this msg board said:
At devart I gave someone a bad review (gasp!). Nothing rude, but just constructive criticism. This girl decided to freak out and I almost got banned for it. I got a policy violation or something stupid like that. Anywho the point is... I didnt like someone's work, made comment of it and the whole world almost came to an end. Incidents like that are why devart is known for people who cant handle criticism.
What's custo known for then? Admins who operate the most staggering double standards?
Max, i agree nu|L , has been giving out some pretty poor ratings, and comments on about everything i see him comment or rate on...and i am sure everything he looks at isnt crap...anyways i use to be no better than him but i have been trying to pull myself together but if u have warned him many times in the past maybe its time to think about banning? anyhow i don't submit my work here i either submit at depthcore, devart or was deskmod customize.org has too good of standards my art could never compare to some of the great art work here i would feel embarassed if i submitted here cause everyone is use to excellence :(
yes thats right hate on the creator of customize the man who is number #1. There is no such thing as an unfair rating its just opinions and we need to get over the fact that everyone has opinions.
