I can't believe no one talked about it for the past week here in custo.
I downloaded the beta version (or is it pre-beta? alpha? doesnt matter... google it as: Winamp 5 download) and I'm very happy with it. -first of all, GREAT SKIN woooo, I like the winamp modern skin, damn nice and sleek(anyone know how to create a custom color scheme for it?) and I can use the MMD3 skin without using the buggy Winamp 3. -second, veeery very stabile system, even when I run kazaa bittorent, photoshop, and several other apps at the same time, it doesnt freeze or do anything nasty. No bugs as far as I know. -third, damn good file manager, even works for videos, veery very useful (at least for me)
Conclusion: although I'm still waiting for the 'good' version of Sonique 2, I really like Winamp 5 and sticking with it.
I think it uses more memory than winamp 2 or 3, maybe not Winamp 3 coz the memory hogger is really the heavy skins(methinks), but definately smaller than sonique 2 alpha (It kept goin slow on my comp)
Anyway, I usually use QCD and the occasional Sonique 1, but Winamp 5 is my new MP3-video-whore-machina right now.
it runns with both winamp2 and 3 skins, system usage is all up to the skin you use... for a winamp2 skin, it uses less resources than winamp 2.91..(skins like milkamp) for winamp 3, i definitely feel the system lag such as skins like PAD and MMD3, it is definitely faster than amp3.
as for the defualt MODERN skin. it runs fast and clean, even with the visualization and extra functions it has. system usage was at 4% - 5%, during some of my own testing, and up to as much as 9% when running some of the more advanced visual features in the skins preferences.
amp5 is awesome. can't wait till the official release at winamp.com
i just wish for the sake of . damn it. winamp 5 does not let me load any freeform skins. i give up.

What is the purpose of this release? They didn't even implement the basic features of Winamp3 that made it somewhat appealing. For instance, when you double-click an MP3 in Windows Explorer, it should enque AND play the file, or play the file and not touch the active playlist. This is so lame!
okay well to anyone who used the "prealphaness" winamp 5 needs to uninstall before they install this to make freeform skins work. fpearson the point in this release is to kill winamp3, it was a memory hog and was just utterly useless. winamp 5 supports freefrom skinning but uses alot less memory its more winamp 2.0 then it is 3.0.
(sorry about all the posts) woah this thing kills memory if you use avs or movies in the "modern" skin. i get 91% usage with just avs on. with out it i get a steady 9%. compaired to 60% with the classic skin with avs and 4% with out avs. (mind you this is with everything running). oh and on a side note with the mmd 3 skin it runs at 20% with out avs and 75% with avs.
As an average joe computer user I think the best think about this beta release is the ability to finally use a winamp 3 skin every once in and awhile if I feel like it. It also seems to run very nice and clean and so far has given me no problems. Heh, another small fix that turned out to make me want to keep this on my hard drive is the fact that shuffled lists now start shuffled..
God I got sick of hearing ACDC every time I started up the program.
ive tested alpha, betas and final of winamp3, and the beta of winamp5, and i must say that I don't know how there's people using winamp3 it's a piece of s*** compared to winamp5 and it's in beta stage, I would like to see a few minor features/fixes in the final release. If you use it with a winamp2.x skin it's like no difference at all.
I've uninstalled my winamp2.91 and left as a default player winamp5, hope to see the final release soon and new skins so functional as the modern skin.
Im with disavowed, Winamp 2.x and 3.x are now completely off my system, and WA5 is now the default. Being able to use WA3 freeform skins and have it work/load/function as fast as 2.x is just a godsend in my opinion. I havnt had any CPU problems with AVS or anything while using MMD3 or PAD (Two of my faves)...profile has specs of my system..but I dont think that'd matter to something like this THAT heavily...oh well just my two pennies.
:I'd walk a million miles for your love, I'd walk a million more for that little thing you do with your tongue :
I hated it, but mostly for supperficial reasons: the skin, the installer, and bloatedness. These are things that can change. I think it's doing too much though. I just want something to play music and have some cool visual effects sometimes.
Oi, they went back to the menu bar system. I've never been a fan of that. The skin had a few nice tricks, but it was ugly, too busy, too big (on 1024x768). It suffers from the horrible lack of use of fitts law that most wa3 skins do, yet wa2 did use.
Keep in mind that I'm a sonique fan who likes freeform skins, but who actually uses (and likes alright) winamp2 because almost every litestep theme has a winamp2 control in it. I have hopes for wa5, but I'm not switching over yet.
Btw, the installer and app need to learn how to leave my registry alone. I hate having to fix my file types. :\
okay to answer that color question, click the "Config" button/slider to go to the different color scheme choices, EQ setting, and other misc options for winamp5
The thing feels like wa3 to me personally (esp the installation footprint). The modern skin feels like an ordinary kids-friendly windows app. At least it support the older 2.x skins.
I already knew the config and color themes, but is there anyway you can create a color scheme other than the ones already there? Namheul suggested that I reshack it, but I never reshack anything before. What's a reshack anyway?
That will be hacking or editing the resource files in an executable or library file. You can change/edit/import/export bitmaps, icons, sounds, videos, animations, version information, menu structure, and etc. If you need a extrator or builder, just search for it.

And ... I uninstall wa5 pretty quickly, but if the modern skin is in a "skin file" with compressed files, like previous builds of wa(s), then you can just color alter the prefs and graphic files.

Just to add, winamp5 dosn't seem to have many changes when it comes to relation with litestep. infact all the buttons in LS themes still do what they would have done with winamp2. (considoring winamp5 is just winamp2 with cool plugin's basicaly i see what it works that way).
I`ve been useing Winamp5 since it`s available on www. Version beta (actual) is much better then PreAlfa (just few of you probably knew about it then). I`ll use it off course... and I`ll waiting for stable version of Winamp5.
Skins: both skins from W2 and W3 can by used with W5 - It`s obvious. : )

Sorry wasted pixels, I've just been really busy at the university and I havn't been keeping in touch as much as I would like :-/ Guess I havn't missed anything, so i'll head back to my cave with my photoshop and my winamp 2 with media monks skin. Gearman out.
I've been using winamp5 for about a fortnight now and I'm lovin' it. At least 5 times better than winamp3 which was turd, but does anyone know if you can use the winamp3 components such as deux with it, I know the winamp2 plugins work but I just not sure about the winamp3 components. Thanks guys.
