The new g4 ibook just hit the market what do you think.
i was unfortunately looking to get something from my parent for my B-Day which is in January and the graduation present which is in march. combined.
and i dont have a laptop so i was looking at something which is small with like a 12"screen and is lite weighing under 5lbs and not to much expensive under $1200. what do you think considering i make webgraphics for money.
"The new g4 ibook just hit the market what do you think?"
It's a very nice system, I'd cut off a finger to own one of the good iBooks, or better yet a 17" poewerbook G4 with YellowDog Linux installed,....DROOOOOOLLLL!!!
I say if ya can get one, go for it. Have fun dude.
There was an article like not quite a month ago stating something about how Apple, comparitavly to Intel, is not anywhere near the speed that Intel has achieved and is overpriced hardware for what it is.
I'd say no. It isn't worth the money. Yes, they look pretty and such and really are a nice to have, but if you want to get a G4 for 3 grand, you can get double the hardware for 3 grand on a PC counterpart.
I personnaly often use a ibook g4 (3 of them) and I never noticed any superiority vs a p4 laptop (3 dell), slower in the beginning, slower with almost any photoshop effect, slower with any multimedia app. G4, laptops OR desktops are just donkeys with a fine design, more expensive, that's just it :(
(as a matter of fact, we tested a G4 bipro vs a 2.4 pentium, both desktops, and in photoshop, the g4 is 4 to 8 times slower than the p4)
I still don't understand the draw of Macs. I've used macs for 8 years until May 2002 - from the PowerPC 6100/60, right up to G4s running OSX. I use XP now, and XP is just as good as OSX. I'm not blown awway by macs anymore, simple as that. Intel and AMD - through their instnse rivalry, have come out with faster more powerful chips, sometimes every two months or so. Microsoft has given us an OS everyone can like, and which is easy to use. Startpanel is easy, everything is there, I can get to my files, and that's that. Customization options are also there for those who want them. Besides, the G5 is no longer the world's fastest anything - except perhaps the fastest way to empty your wallet.
Nothing revolutionary with macs, and for that matter, nothing revolutionary with Windows, either. So, is there a compelling reason to mortgage your house in order to buy a mac? No.
Please don't misunderstand me, I don't want to chide anyone for their choices and their tastes. If you like macs for whatever reason, please, go ahead and get one. You only live once and you should do all you can to fulfill whatever desires you have! :-) Just know that you can still get a great PC system for half the cost.
I prefer Macs for my graphics work, especially because OS X and the G4 with AltiVec (which speed up Photoshop like nothing else). It ships with Panther, so that's one less update to buy. If you ask me, great deal. I've never met someone personally who isn't in love with their Mac laptop.
thanks for your supports, i will decide in a few months and if i am buying a win based laptop it will have a celeron for the same price. thanks though.
i'm not too sure about what you guys are talking about when saying that Intel and AMD have faster chips, the g5 3.0 ghz model will be released soon, and the 2.0 ghz g5 already makes any intel chip its bitch. Yea, macs are more expensive, but thats the price to pay for quality control that apple puts into their computers, it's all of their parts and not some third party bullshit like in a dell or something....go with the mac, they last longer and therefore are a better investment
thanks for that weiner220 i will wait to see the results for that and also i already have a d-top and the new G5 is something comperative to the win based alienware and falcon northwest PC's. and G5 is something i will earn after graduating from medical school. which will be when i am 25, long time from now.
"third party bullshit like in a Dell or something".....
weiner (change your name, please, I can't type with a straight face, LOL) . . . Nvidia and ATI are ALL third party "bullshit." And if you're not sure what us guys are talking about, it's basically price/performance ratio. That in fact, is what we're talking about.
By the way, these G4 iBooks look nice and I have a 12" 60gb model somewhere between Taipei and my home right now...
I admit the G4s these days are far slower than P4s (Though faster per MHz, more on par with the Athlon/P3) it has a graphics chip that you won't find on a cheap PC laptop, and is perfectly adequate for anything you could possiby want to use a Laptop for. My old iBook 600 still feels faster than my 1.6GHz Inspiron 2650 ever did, life is not just about numbers guys.
I had a long hard think about this myself recently because we decided to get a laptop for our home office. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Macs but I did check out the iBooks and bang-for-buck I wasn't impressed. I'm looking at an IBM Thinkpad G40 - excellent value for money and just about the best build quality and reliability history around.
i am getting the ibook for $999 b/c of education purposes. The IBM G4 is bulky and is worth $1349. the celeron model is worth $899. (I Hate Celeron) sorry though. i am looking something under 5 lb's
i found an e-machine laptop for $950.00 (at of all places... bestbuy) but, currently it costs more. 15 inch widescreen, mobile amd xp 2400+, ati mobility radeon, 512 pc2100 ddr and 802.11g. sadly, pretty much the same as my desktop pc.
mojo, do you have any reports or links about how e-machines are horrible machines? i’m curious. i was under the impression it is an ibm machine, and they make pretty solid stuff.
saying a specific brand is unstable isn’t too realistic. so many things can make a computer unstable. and within a brand, one may be bad, the other good.
i am still curious about any documentation of the horribleness of eMachines. thanks.
the most likely problem with emachines is that they may use low quality parts. i have no evidence of this but that is just my guess........and there is your answer on how an entire brand can be bad.
That is not a bad deal but i would wait for its price to come lower but Hp has something a like and it is a lil more expensive and i trust HP over emachine check the ZT3000 notebook by hp. or the AMD without the the widesreen is cheaper like $1000, thanks.
Firstly, would you kindly learn how to dis-engage the caps lock on your computer
BESIDES REVIVING THREADS.
I wasn't aware that this was, in fact a crime, and the topic was not very old anyway
AND I DONT REALLY GIVE A CRAP IF YOU HATE ME, I WANNA STAB YOU. YOU FEELIN' LUCKY TODAY?
What kind of response to a comparison in which I didn't even imply that I actually hated you for no reason - everybody is entitled to their own opinions, and I think that saying you hate something before you've even tried it is a little strange
I JUST SAID I HATE MAC, WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? I DONT CARE IF YOU LOVE MAC AND HAVE INTIMATE RELATIONS WITH YOURS.
No, I don't have "intimate" relations with my computer, but it makes me suspicious of you and yours to be defending it before I even said anything
Basically, calm down, I didn't do anything that demanded a death threat in reply...
