i would recommend trying gimp for photoshop, and blender for studio max
both have slightly different UIs so it would probably take a day or so for you to get into swing of things but both are free applications and just as powerful.

Screw morals! I wish the world revolved around pirating and bootlegging, and prostitution. Hey the internet world for the most part does, and look at how well it's doing. WHEEE!
You know, after I hit submit I realized morals has nothing.. well, hardly anything to do with it. It wouldn't be an issue if warez wasn't so readily available... like goat porn. :|
no i have like wat $20,000 worth of freekin software (not legal on my comp) its about art and if ur an artist u shouldn't have to sell your house to buy a brush.
uhh, ok pnaduny that was weird. :o\ If you're rich, don't go the warez route.. if you like, don't have any money to your name, and it's available to you... what laws are going to stop you? Well, untill you get caught and sent upstate, but that hardly ever happens anymore.
Alright, here goes: Developing software is EXPENSIVE. You have to pay people who have very specialized skils lots of MONEY to develop it. And if no one buys it (i.e. everyone STEALS it.) You go broke and are unable to develop new versions, so people will still using the current version of 3DWhatever in the year 2020. Developing software is a risky risky business folks, and a lot of blood sweat and tears goes into it. If you don't want to pay (as much), go the open source route. It's actually more rewarding anyway. ;) It's not just a moral issue, you WILL pay in the end if you swipe stuff cause the freakin' developers will go broke and there'll be no new fun stuff to use. I'm no saint either, but the programs I use heavily are all on the up and up. If you find the program genuinely useful and it makes your life easier or better or more enjoyable somehow, you should buy it (Especially if it's under a hundred bucks! Come on!). Support these people who have enabled your creative statements. Or if you really can't afford it, see if there are other less expensive products made by the same company you can buy, even if you don't think you'll use it so much. If you want to "fuck um in the ear", fine, but I BET YOU'RE ALSO THE FIRST TO BITCH WHEN YOUR FAVORITE PROGRAM ISN'T UPDATED FOR FOUR OR FIVE YEARS. Or ever again. And hey, the brush doesn't make the painter.
In adobe's case I think the bigger companies support'em enough that they don't go outta business. Seriously though, how are we supposed to afford these expensive software? Even games are too damn expensive. The only company I buy games from is blizzard ;-)
I can understand how software companies feel about pirating. I'm also a software developer and it is a lot of work!
Having a warez from a big top Cie (Microsoft, Adobe, CA, ...) isn't gonna do any harm to them in anyway. They counts sales by the thousands, and one more or less, or even a hundred less isn't gonna hurt them at all. They're far more interested in selling 500 licenses to big clients than selling one copy to a struggling artist.
Actualy they are GLAD you use there program. that way, you increase your knowledge and talent AND learn THEIRE application. So that hen you get a job, you'll be moer talented and at ease with THEIRE products and your futur employer will be more tempted to buy it.
It's more evident with Ms Windows. The fact that you have a warez copy doesn't ruffle a single M$ feather. That way you're using products on the Windows plateform and consolidating there market dominace.
Beleive me, it's all been calculated. I know ! :-)
Where warez hurts the most are small developper who rely on each sale for survival. For them, a dozen copy can mean the difference between going backrupt or living to see another version.
Life of the code warrior, been there done that ! :-)
I've been looking for 3ds max4 for about 3months, and I finally found it. After installing my pirated copy of it on my pirated OS (win xp), it doesn't work. Ain't that a bitch. ;/
I also love the little "i know ! :-)" isn't it just the cutest smiley you've ever seen! Man look at how the minus signs just blends in! Truly a Chef d'Oeuvre! :D
BTW, as for the XP registration: The pirated copy on your computer is now on the top of their "profits lost due to piracy" list. They no longer have reasons to tolerate it, so they're tripping over themselves trying to stop it.
Of couse it doesn't work (like everything else they do!) since most of us here already have final versions before it's official launch! :)
