this was not a holiday originally celebrating evil. it was a day to pay homage to the spirits of your ancestors and, basically, a 'day of the dead'. supposedly the spirits walked the land and could do things to you unless you either scared them away (hense jack-o-lanterns) or appeased them (gifts to the dead and such). it's only a more recent concept from the past few centuries that has made the holiday about evil.
