Hi, i need some help. I just bought an audio cd and when i tried to copy the music files from the cd to my iPod (and my computer) I noticed that it says it's Copy Controlled on the CD and I can't find the files on the CD,not even in "unhide files" mode. So, I was wondering if there is a way around this problem or does that mean I can never never ever somehow copy the files to my pc?
The CD comes with an included player but it's really ugly and i don't want it taking up space. (not winamp, not wmp, just some sucky looking thing)
ummm this may sound stupid but when you pop your CD into your drive try holding shift down.
Better explain it better so i don't look so stupid. Many CD now have a pretty pathetic locking mechanism that is a program that resides in the CD's autorun commands. holding shift bypasses this.
There are ways around it. If you're playing it on your PC, you can use a sound recording program to grab the audio indirectly. With a little tweaking, it sounds just as good as straight-from-CD MP3's.
I haven't tried this in years. I used the built-in Sound Recorder (back when I had 95) to do this before ripping programs were around. Now, you can do that, and you should be able to find something to convert it to .mp3 from .wav.
I had the same problem with the Kings of Leon album. The trouble is that all the data on the CD is placed in the last track, and the other tracks are merely markers. This, as far as I know, makes it impossible to rip. Unless you can find some insanely illegal piece of software that will get around this. Just to let you know others are suffering too. I had to download the album from Kazaa eventually, which was time consuming and just really pissed me off.

ive tried using tweak xp just like harper suggested but it didn't work (i'm not that well versed in pc tweaking so i had no idea what i was doing anyways).
as for ripping, i use wmp or iTunes to copy the tracks but for this cd, neither works. (plus, iTunes has a big advantage, ripping AND converting into mp3 at the same time).
bottom line : got frustated so i decided to download the album from kazaa (which took such a long time). what a waste of $49.90
ok.. i've had a dance cd that had the same thing, it had 1 little file when i opened it, i tried to play the cd but it won't play on any of my player except windows media player, so download the newest version, it should have a copy feature, then the songs will appear and and select all of them, then it will copy but it will be in wma format, so then just get a wma to mp3 converter from google or downloads.com and your set, then transfer them to your ipod :)
OK try this only if you can get Winamp to play the CD (i use winamp 2.6 for this.) Go to Preferences - Plugins - Output - Nullsoft Disk Writer plugin and hit config, have it output to some folder. then when you play the CD it should save the files as WAVs and then you can burn them on your own CD and rip them off of that as MP3s if needed. I know it is a round-about way but it may work.

I used a completely separate CD player plugged into the audio input thingy once and managed to make some pretty good MP3s. If it's really copy protected, you should take it back to the store and try to get your money back. Even if you don't think you can, you can at least try for the sake of letting the store know that they're selling useless crap, and you don't like it. At least, I would.
Caesar's way might work. Then again, the problem with these CDs - I know EMI is a big offender of this - is that they don't play in a lot of CD players, including PC players, car stereos and everything. It sucks. Crap like this is why I don't listen to alot of music.
janes addiction something like that, it bugs me - i can't return it and it dosn't play in any cd player. Why the record company would use such a faulty way to copyprotect is beyond me - i refuse to install a program that comes with a cd to play the music on it.
hmm whaddyaknow? it IS from EMI...bah still, im going to try caesar1996's suggestion and download winamp and see if it works...just incase i come across anymore nasty c.c cds.
I really wanted to buy the new a perfect circle but - its on emi. When it comes to the point that cd's that i want to buy can't play on my cd players - The industry better understand why i download.
whoa i did something like that- the new nickleback cd, the long road, comes with stupid stuff like that. i got the player that comes swith it to play, and then used cool edit pro to record it.
shocks, yeh i know everything should work fine--since i tried everything. anyway, i returned the cd,got my money back and just before i left the store (Tower Records, heehee) i yelled out loud "I'm better off downloading that album from kazaa!!!!!!"
