Just wondering if anyone has tried it and if I should bother to upgrade from 7.1. On a related note, has anyone tried to do a KDE theme here? Thank ye, colossus72
To me openbsd is more for systems where security and reliability are an issue (i.e., servers), not so much for me goofing at home. I'm just want to know if the newest red hat is worth ditching my old one. Thank you, colossus72
actually the kernel included with redhat 7.2 is a heavilly patched custom redhat kernel based on 2.4.7 (pre 6 iirc). The security problems that have plagued the recent kernels do not affect the kernel included with 7.2. Props to Alan Cox and co.
FreeBSD isn't bad. But for home use either operating system is fine (allthough the X environments are still pretty sucky compaired to windows or mac os). I'd use a BSD based os on a server... and then it wouldn't bother with anything less than OpenBSD.
x isnt really an environment. it's just a set of libraries to do graphics and gui forwarding over the net.
both KDE and Gnome are comperable to windows, imho, while enlightenment is a cooler version of litestep
i personally prefer kde over gnome for touchy-feely reasons (it seems to run smoother) but they are near identical for all sakes and purposes
oh yeah. and kde has konqueror which is by far and away the best browser after ie. it's the only other browser to handle the jscript on http://liquidspin.com correctly.

When I stated 'the X environments' I was refering to GNOME, KDE, CDE, XFCE et al. Notice that the 'E' in each acronym stands for 'Environment'. I'm quite aware of what the X windowing system is.
IMHO, the aforementioned are not quite up to scrap yet. I have been tracking KDE 2x via cvs, and whilst I have been impressed with the progress it still has a long way to go. Userland application are generally below par that of windows (kmail -> outlook, konq -> ie), allthough they are constantly getting better.
cde is a pile of shit and should never be metioned again. i actually use openwindows on my sunbox cause i refuse to use it.
konq has no deficiencies that i found versus ie. i honestly have yet to see konq fail on a webpage, or even crash. (netscape mozilla and galeon on the other hand . . . )
also, i completely, completely, completely disagree with you on one thing, and here it is
LINUX IS NOT COMPETING WITH WINDOWS
i repeat
LINUX IS NOT COMPETING WITH WINDOWS.
linux is at heart a hobbyist os for people who like messing with computers. it has a niche function, a niche following, and (like, say, death metal) will adapt and morph to continue being the best product for this niche, the mainstream be damned
i frankly dont give a flying fuck what y'all run, i just know that linux is the best os for 2 of my 4 computers. i also dont care if the total linux users out there number 100, 10000, or 1 billion. i dont hang out in the community and i dont really care about the companies.
linux is the ultimate zen nihilist. it simply exists, free. you wont to use it, partake, you dont, dont. it moves for no man, either way.
