I've DLed a style xp theme, and unzipped it to the proper folder. It hasn't shown up with the xp themes I've installed from other sites. Upon closer look, it seems the theme folders are installed, but the themes from this site don't have the "Windows Theme File" file of the new theme. I'm bright enough to think that means something. I can also walk upright. Could you wise ones tell me how to make this thing work?
I'm not quite sure what you're asking. The only way themes show up in the theme menu is if they have a .theme file. It is possible that things don't show up in the appearance tab as well, and I think it's because they might not have a shellstyle.dll file. In this case, go to the file through Windows Explorer and double-click the .msstyles file. This should apply the theme, and it should remain in the appearance menu as long as it is applied. This should be easy to handle provided you don't change too frequently.
As far as it not staying applied after a restart, I'm not sure about that. It could be some problem with your StyleXP.
1) Get the uxtheme.dll patch. 2) After installing, restart your comp. 3) Unzip the *.msstyles file to the directory C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\**ThisTheme**\**ThisTheme**.msst yles, where **ThisTheme** is the name of the theme. For example, if you're downloading KoL's Milk, the path would be C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Milk\Milk.msstyles. 4) Open up Display Properties, go to the Appearance tab, and select the theme you installed from the drop-down list.
hmm.. sorry to ressurect a dying topic but: okay, i have an msstyles file and it is in \\windows\\resources\\themes\\thistheme\\ - sure. well it wont show up in the display settings dialog. im guessing i need a theme file. (which the vis style doesnt come with.) what can i do?
I think it's actually the shellstyle.dll that makes it show up there. It's either that or the .theme file, but either way I'm pretty sure the .msstyles file by itself doesn't do anything. If you double-click the .msstyles file and have it applied, you can save a theme file yourself. This way it should know to use that VS when you apply that theme.
That happens if you use the wrong patcher, I know, but other than that I'm not sure. Since nobody has asked, make sure that you are using the correct uxtheme.dll. There are different patchers for base XP and XP SP 1. Also, in my experience, the first patcher I used for SP1 didn't work. So you'll have to check.
