first of all RH6 is old, very old and not worth installing. secondly no, you can't run winamp in linux. thats a lot like asking can I run audion in windows.
Basicly, it's an advanced OS w/ a high learning curve. Unless you know quite a bit then don't even go near it. My friend put linux on his machine and it ended up crashing a lot. He knows a lot about computers, but obviously not enough.
And most all programs/games are for Windows or Mac. You have to get a program that lets you run Windows programs/games. Even then still some don't work. It's a lot more work then worth.
ADVANTAGES: More Stable, Will not slow down after long uptimes, Everythings Manual so you have control over what your system does.
DISADVANTAGES: Not all programs work for Linux, the majority dont. VERY high learning curve, Its hard to get it set up when you first install because of the way you need to install drivers and such. Its not userfriendly if you dont know what the hell your doing.
Dont jump right into linux, read up on it first. Plus i dont suggest using it for everyday use because of the fact that alot of stuff doesent work on it, thats why i have a second computer running linux. If you do want to use it for every day use though, there is a window emulatlor which makes it so u can use win progs
i hope that helped some, i would explain more but i just woke up and im still kinda asleep.

the setup depends on what distrobution you're using. i've installed redhat9, fedora core, mandrake 9.2, slackware 9.1, arch 0.5, jamd, and, what i'm uisng now, mepis. they're all different. most (read all but slack & arch) are very easy to set up. if you can install windows, you can install redhat/fedora or mandrake. mepis is nice because it's also a live cd, meaning you can use linux in all it's glory without installing it.
no, you can't run winamp, but you can run xmms, which will use all winamp2 skins and will play more than just mp3s and wavs.
as for games, you can install winex. if you have to have your IE or your MS Office, you can install crossoveroffice (well, you have to buy it first).
linux isn't that hard...but get a book (or a REALLY good web site) and don't expect it to work right away.

Mandarke is a good option for a dual boot or stand alone install, particularly if you're still looking to run Windows apps, as it has good WineX support outta the box.
Red Hat is everywhere and goes on easily. I have not used it in many a moon and can't vouch for it's love of WineX.
If you just want to try linux and not make any sytems changes, try a bootable cd distro, such as Knoppix.
In all honesty most major distros have installers as idiot proof as Windows these days and KDE is looking very good. Hard to mess it all up. I think and halfway savvy Windows user can step into the enviroment and be productive within hours.
Your challenge is to learn the nuances of the Unix style file system and the immense control you have over your new linux box. Sounds like good times to me. :)
Also, there are BUNCHES of sites better than this to ask this question. Just google "linux newb noob help" or something. People WILL help you. If you've a good, excited attitude they'll be nice to you for the most part because they want to absorb you into their collective.
Dunno about a merger between RH and MDK, but Mandrake is RH-based, I remember older versions of Mandrake like 4, where they tell you in the manuals that it's RH based, but now days, I'd have to say that Mandrake really has grown into a good distro in it's own right.
ViperGlyph feel free to contact me via AIM or in the chan, for any pointers/advice about linux/unix installations, etc.
testing 1 2 3 Redhat and Mandrake have in no way ever or even thought of merging. They are two very distinct companies with redhat being the better of the 2.
Running a *nix based system is not for the faint of heart as its very involved, and requires something that many people don't want to do. Read. If you do want to install any linux/bsd distro make sure you read README/INSTALLS and any other docs before you ask anyone questions becuase 9 times out of 10 you'll only hear "RTFM!"
i`ve been thinkin about this for a while so i have picked up some info on linux an i just got a dvd rom about it so i`m gonna veiw that in a bit
and i know it`s more complicated aso might take a while,
thanx for the info all
