you'd have a bigger chance on asking this question on a MAX message forum....there's tons of them out there...i'm sure sommeone can help you out on this one
in the material editor, make a material w/ 100% self illumination.
for GI that kinda stuff is controlled through the render properites, but if you were to say make an object w/ full self illumination, it COULD act as a light source, if one were so inclined to use it as such. --------------------``' Philanthropy.
make sure the object is generating caustics and g.i. under it's properties, instaed of just cranking on the illumination I'd try applying a lume shader to the object and then adjust that. :)
Here's a scene lit with one box emitting photons but a bit too much (blue, white on the grnd plane):
Actually I was thinking more about light boxes they used on photographs. Thanks for the tips. Cool bike model, very tron-like on the illuminated one. I'd use that as a WP :)
This is as far as I went on mental ray material and lighting: http://www.geocities.com/aphaits/mrtestballs.jpg I hate the light reflection, that's why i need some lightboxes. also the black one on the top is actually lume in mr material, but I don't know how to set it right.
and this one I tried with my car model: http://www.geocities.com/aphaits/mrtestcar.jpg came out good, but lacks reflected objects. Maybe I should try HDRI reflection or something. What do you think?
hmmm, I lokked up HDRI in google and most of it explains that you need to have somekind of fish-eye photo of the preferred environment. How do you set up HDRI?
also, final gather makes the skylight look nice on the objects but it's renders as slow as a dying snail, is there any other way to emulate outdoor skylight? or is my settings incorrect?
