Save your money. Volunteer at a soup kitchen for the weekend or soemthing. It'll be a far more rewarding experience.
The movie is a 2-hour long, pathetic bloodfest that tries way too hard. It's basically Christ getting the living daylights beat out of him, almost from the time it opens to the very end. By halfway through, the whole thing oozed of overkill, from the ocean of blood they covered James Caviezel in (played Christ), to the token pseudo-animal Roman soldiers, to the fact that after about 2,500 lashes, contusions, and internal hemorrhaging, he was still able to make it to calvary . . . . oh yes, he was part divine . . . .
Caviezel was covered in so much blood and with so many tears on his body, that I was hardly able tell him apart from an over-sauced chicken wing.
What's more, is that the movie is galactically anti-semitic . . . .
The only interesting element was the depiction of "Satan" . . . and I suppose the moments when Pontius Pilate had to wrestle with his conscience.
Well I couldn't disagree more, but everybody is entitled to their opinion. The movie is especially _not_ anti-Semitic. Every person who lived in that time in that area was Jewish. Jesus and his followers were Jewish. The majority of the good people, neutral people, and bad people in the movie are Jewish because they're the main demographic. If anything, it made the Romans look especially barbaric, because they actually did this to people.
On top of that, a lot of the actors were Jewish, including Maia Morgenstern (who played Mary) and Olek Mincer (who played the high priest Nicodemus). What I don't get is that if the movie were anti-Semitic, why is half the Jewish crowd sympathetic and supportive? Why does Simon of Cyrene have a transformation helping him?
Your other points are all valid, though I don't share your opinions. I just can't see how the movie could possibly be construed as anti-Semitic without also being pro-Semitic.
it's retarded to think that this movie is going to cause all kinds of antisemitism. (about all i've heard about it is how everyone is going to hate the jews now, nm the fact that no jew alive today had a single thing to do with the supposed events of 2000 years ago) it's basically fiction. whether you believe or don't, this movie is far from an official biographical representation. seriously, how could it be? what's even more retarded, is that some dumbass is going to take this movie as cause to become antisemitic and do something stupid. and i hope that guy gets shot on principle.
Wow, I never thought people could be so ignorant. That's all I have to say to those blasting the movie for something that so clearly doesn't exist. It's fine not to like the movie for it's violent content, etc. But to say it was anti-semetic. It sounds like a bunch of self-hating Jews to me.
12 bucks to see a movie? I thought the ticket prices around here were bad.
i think it's funny how some people said mel gibson was taking a huge risk by putting up $25 million of his own money to make the film. i mean, how risky is it to put out a pro-jesus movie in a nation which is 80% christian?
wow...i am...i am SO inspired now...gibson was just doing something he wanted to do. and, from what i hear, the movie isn't that bad. cinematically it's good, but what you take into it is what you bring out of it. obviously some of you found the movie boring and stupid...and others have found it to be something they enjoyed. as for the whole anti-semitism thing...well...again, it's what you take into it. keep an open mind and don't take the movie as being completely true or doctorine to follow, and don't get caught up in the hub-bub around it religiously and you'll probably find it to be a much better experience than LTD did... *goes to perform hate crimes against herself*
i actually haven't seen it, and am not really interested to. and my comments weren't supposed to come across as pro- or anti-the movie (i'm not sure if it read that way). just anti-stupid people. i like the way Fenris put it - what you take into it is what you bring out of it. each should make his/her own opinion on it without letting someone else's affect how you go into it.
ANit-semitic my hole! Regardless of how entertaining the movie is to you, the truth still clearly remains, even to some one as anti-religious and anti-god as me, that the basic underline is known to everyone. It was the Jewish establishment at the time, the Jewish high priests, schemed to put down the uncontrollable and trouble-making rebel, now known as Jesus the Christ. Getting angry for simply stating historical truth is now way to foster close understanding.
And beside, ethnic Jews aren't the only Semitic people. There are other Jews or Judaist in this world, then "them." Even for the ethnic Jews, most are marginally Judaists, as a great portion partice other religions or none at all. ie. Intertestingly, many Jews are Catholic. Okay but gets into a more controversal topic, and I'm getting off-topic enoigh.
Going to read some Care Bears books now...

The only ppl that should be blamed for the death of the Christ are the ppl who were actually there 2000 years ago in Jerusalem that actually did persecuted and crucified Jesus, not the present Jewish community who were neither there nor had anything to do with the crucifixtion. This happened two millemniums ago, I don't see how the hell people could relate this back to the present day Jewish community who are obviously: NOT RESPONSIBLE, and is just as much in the dark about the whole thing as to who is really responsible for Jesus's death as you and I. This is just like SARS or 911. All of a sudden all arab ppl are potential 'terrorists' or all Asian ppl are disease spreading plague freaks! Jesus, it's a movie about the death of the Christ, does ppl have to make such a freaking big deal about EVERYTHING?
as for all the people who say the violence was over-the-top, it was just portaying the actual event. being crucified is the single most painfull thing that can happen to a person. the word excruciating was invented on behalf of crucifixion.
Listen people: All this shit is make-believe, okay?, like Jack & the Beanstalk and Goldilocks & the Three Bears. A fairy tale. None of it is real. There is no imaginary friend who lives up in the sky who is responsible for all creation. Get a life. Stop hating people because of whatever arbitrary bullshit religion they've chosen, whatever it may be. (It doesn't matter; they're all wrong.)
When you finally start thinking clearly, grow up, and become an athetist like me, we'll all have a good laugh about it.
I'm pagan... so I looked at the movie strictly as a movie, I didn't go for any of the religious stuff.
Honestly, I thought the movie was flimed really well. Some of the violence was over-kill, but I think they were going for "yeah, that's the shit he had to go through"; not necessarily, "woah! that was the most awesome whoopin ever! it was totally rad!" (i deserve a beating fit for Jesus after saying that).
Either way, the filmography (that the word?) was excellent and it was good as a movie. As for the religious stuff, I'm not one to give an opinion...
I hate liars. I hate hypocrites. I hate haters. Now gimmie a hug.
shut up priceed, if you don't believe in christianity thats your own thing, but you dont have to go and insult other religions. the least you could do is respect others beliefs.
What I think is interesting is that none of you have picked up on the fact that Gibson is an ultra-right wing Catholic. He uses his position to get his own bizarre views into the mainstream. All his own films are mind-bogglingly simplistic and skewed towards his viewpoint - Braveheart, The Patriot for instance.
Braveheart was supposed to be based on a true story, and I'm not sure how The Patriot reflects Mel's viewpoints. Mel directed Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote it. Mel didn't write or direct the Patriot. I'm not sure how his viewpoints can get across that much as a lead actor. You're right - he is part of an ultra-conservative fringe sect of Catholicism (and don't even mention his clearly insane father).
I still don't see how he pushes his views into his movies any more than anybody else. That's your artistic license as a filmmaker to do so - but I don't think he does it.
But good points and commentary aside, I must say I regret starting this thread. I've caused everyone involved somewhat of a disservice, things are getting quite volatile, and while I did want some debate, I didn't realize that my rant might cause this kind of bad blood.
Welcome to religion. I was dumb not to see it coming.
Anyway, I hope we can let this thread die, at least for my sake. The Bertuzzi thread turned ugly enough, but it ended quietly, if I remember correctly.
I'm all for letting this thread die. On a side note, maybe the new site will have something to let you delete threads if you started them. I think vBulletin allows that, but I'm not sure. I know a bunch of forums do.
Woah! This thread is on top. Well I think I will I help carry it bit longer too. Calling a Jesus movie anti-Semitic is more or less expected. But more stupid event occurs. Let me warn you that even your font system is not safe from the same kind of shit we have experienced here – carrying on furiously about basically nothing.
For example, some cowardly two-bits had cried to MS and MS had no choice but to issue a “Critical Update and Service Packs” patch for the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font. You must be thinking that must contain some malicious codes or something. Wrong. It contained symbols of the Star of David and 2 swastikas, which are legit and just purely cultural and religious symbols. So a tick-tick-tick we go and must warn everyone with font to patch their Windows for a “Critical Security” reason.

I don't get why everyone is so hostile over this movie. This movie isn't anymore Anti-Semitic than Shindler's List was Anti-German. It's a mere retelling of events, true or untrue (debatable), that is slanted to suit the "artistic views" of the director. This is America where freedom of speech exists, assess the film's theatrical, not religious quality. If your going to be stupid and bash other people's religious views simply because they don't match your own then go take your ignorance elsewhere. -Andrew-
