ey, trying to get my head around the true meaning of pixel art. mainly trying to work out how to do art like this http://www.pixelfreak.com/v3/img/poster.png with no major app like photoshop and the kind. getting the brain to grasp everything in 3d has been the hardest as shadows, lighting and thickness of objects now need to be considered. it will be for the best i hope, something to do aswell. i'll get to the point. are there any artists in this field that could give me some help me out with some tips and tricks [ sounds like a bloody game doesn't it ]. thats it, time to get back to mspaint.
basicly, yeah, paint is what you can use. It has the same color range as ps and you don't need anything but the pencil tool and lines to do it... and maybe fill... Just keep trying and you'll get better. :) Hey, by the way, post some stuff when you finish!

and some tips... don't try to make stuff up as you create , try to come up with a whole picture before you start. Also, be creative. I've seen some lunar bases and shit and they are pretty sweet. Anyway, it's late...

Start off by learning to do 8-bit bitmaps/icons (stay small first, then repeat and alter them for city/landscapes, people)with no alpha masking, becuase where all these things got their origin.

colossus : well that was a good time, in the end i found litestep which did the exact same as my shell. cept litestep was a hell of alot better and didn't run on a single resolution being 800 x 600.
dogbert : i'm trying to be unique, trying to do stuff differently, personally i haven't seen any close up room based pixel art [ you know the big name it gets ... ]. there might be a few twists to that image anyways, just trying something "new". and yeah my brain can't think laterally, its just a spur of the moment thing. "a table could go there" or a "porn flick could go on one of those tv's" ... completely random, don't blame me it was customize.org fault. they changed me.
jujube : icons suck, especially 8-bit ones. and especially the small 16x16 ones. i know what you mean about starting small, but personally when i finish a project i want it to be great, awesome, brilliant or worth erasing. thats why i start out with big canvas's 1280x1024 and not 16x16.
im glad you started this thread, i too have been interested in pixel art but have never known where to start. i have tried and made a few things, but i never like my own work so i never make it public. it was sites like http://www.mrwong.de and http://www.pixelfreak.com that made me want to do pixel art. in fact, i always wanted to have a level of mrwongs soup apartments ( can be found here http://www.mrwong.de/myhouse/ ), but never created one. anyway, im curious to see what you come up with qwertz, i may retry pixel art myself, who knows.

marz : yeah there's a book too, much too old to be of use though. most tutorials are related to "arcade game graphics" you know those blocky tiled pos. simcity is a perfect example, final fantasy and all that aswell, now that i come to think of it, almost every arcade game.
sonic : sounds good, great links too. pixel art is one of those things that look all the time, no matter the mood or judgement. i'll see what i can do with this one, then i'll see what you can do [ you'll win as i have no experience or knowledge on pixel art, i'm just doing, not thinking ]. maybe a collaboration might be possible if we both get something done, i can promise the custo crew here will love something along those lines. ;]
hmm, yes im always down for a collab. ive had so many winamp skin ideas that i could never do, but i have drawn out the basics, if someone wants to collab there. im currently (started right after reading this post and posting my links, HAHA) on a pixel project of my parents house. itll be cool. im just doi the house for now, ill ad the yard and driveway and cars and whatnot some other time. ill have plenty of time for a collab in a few days, as ill be going to my parnets since college will be done for the summer, ill prolly get a job, but ill still ahve time.
