it's hard to tell right now because the only versions out are so incredibly alpha, but from what microsoft has stated their goals for the project are, and what they're working with right now (the alphas), plus a couple of demos i've seen, longhorn is going to truly be quite a revolutionary product. hopefully they'll live up to all their goals, because i think windows really needs a good makeover. xp was a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done. i think it's a good start that they are taking their time developing it, rather than coming out with an upgrade every 3 years. 5-6 years for development is really going to help.

It all depends whether they implement this idea of only running Longhorn approved software and hardware.
Developers will have to pay Microsoft to have products tested and approved.
If this happens it will kill development of low budget, shareware and freeware software on the windows platform.
At the moment I believe there is a compromise proposed, where there will be a bin of approved software (Microsoft, Adobe, Discreet etc.) in a secure folder. Part of the licence agreement says Microsoft can download stats from your machine.
All other software will be installed wherever you want and safe from Microsoft.
