i've a strange problem with my pc. when i play some games after a random length of time the screen goes off (as if its in stand by), the audio carries on a little longer than also stops, then i have to reboot the pc. it doesnt happen with all games, i can play quake 3 / 2, mafia n some others for hours and hours with no problems. however games such as ut2k3, doom 3, farcry and prob most other new games always just hang after a while :/
thought it was PSU related, but i got a new one and it still does it, dont have a problem with heat otherwise it wouldnt effect certian games and not others. got the latest drivers, up-to-date windows.

The only thing I can think (aside from the power supply, which you already thought of) is a driver failure. However, I've never had them with Nvidia cards. My old ATI Fire at work used to do the exact same thing before it crashed. I didn't have any idea what it was, but basically the system learned after a while (if that's possible) and instead of crashing too hard it would cut back to Windows at 640x480 in 16 colors.
might be the gpu cooler - is the geforce overclocked? my 4800 spends most of its time overclocked and doesnt overheat with most games, but in farcry and ut2k4 it will crap out from time to time. you might think about a third party video cooler.
yeah, sounds like the vid card as it seems your "graphics heavy" games are causing the problem. Wasn't farcry one of the most graphic heavy game b4 doom 3?
Yeah Doom 3 and Farcry both use the Cry Engine in game. Just try bumping down the settings a level. Another alternative would be just to play less games and get out more?
Hey, give this a try...get a big ass fan, and put it so it cools you graphics card down. I'll bet ya 100$ it won't turn off again... I have the same problem with my Geforce 5600 it does that...
Whats happening is your graphics card is too hot, so it turns off your connection to your moniter --> hence losing your moniter first, than it takes your computer probably 1-2 minutes before it will turn itself off, and your sound and stuff will still be working because your computer is still working, just not your video card...
I don't know why it is doing that, it shouldnt, I bought a new fan for my graphics card and now it doesnt do that... kinda weird, give it a try
cool i'll give that a try, thanks neo_drakin. actually obsanity, i dont play that many games but its just nice to relax with a game when i get back from work once in a while.. ;]
how about you save yourself the trouble of pissing around trying to fix this issue, which if causes the system to lose stability and crash should be seen to and take it down to the shop for repair/maintenance. all we can do is give you advice on possible ways to resolve this issue, 9/10'th of your replies will be to no avai, including this one. take your problem to a specialist or at least a specialist forum. good luck.

"Hey, give this a try...get a big ass fan, and put it so it cools you graphics card down. I'll bet ya 100$ it won't turn off again... I have the same problem with my Geforce 5600 it does that..." Heh, thats what I do to cool my cpu so I can overclock it higher than I would be able to with the regular cpu fan.
Ya, you can bring your computer to a specialist like qwertz said, but than again you'll end up paying a huge amount of cash because your problem is a rare one and hard to diagnois since it only happens in games right? Just give the fan thing a try, I tell ya its your graphics card overheating
