Do you really know what Art is?

1101
rkenshin says:

I tell you what, I'd like to know how many people in here know what digital art is. Customize.org, like skinz.org, like deviantart, deskmod, wincustomize .... you name it ... are websites in which you can post your form of Digital Art.

I like the little kids who register for this site and seem to not know what that is. For example, HaGeShiku just posted one of his great pieces of artwork (originally posted on Deskmod), and all he gets is "FILTERS FILTERS FILTERS" and other rips.

Personally, HaGe is like DAVIDIAN. DAVID has been exploring his artwork / wallpapers through his inner emotions and has turned out extremely powerful wallpapers. HaGe posted one that was just sheer beauty, subtility, and a wonderful concept.

Too many people rely on 3Ds Max renderings, or other 3D explosions done in any program. Its too trendy and its very, at its own intent, disturbing. Its like, if I don't post a wall that doesnt have some sort of 3D in it, everybody rips on it.

First off, its not for you to say how it was created. Who gives a fuck how many filters the person used or how he/she did it. What the best part is is what the final product is.

I like checking out this bad reviews from people, looking into their profile, and seeing that they have either A. not posted a thing or B. post utter crap which is done in 5 minutes. It appears that since other people, such as an admin, likes somebodys elses art more than that person, they flip out and are like "THIS SUX. FILTERS FILTERS FILTERS THATS ALL IT IS. LEARN HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM".

Now I'm directing this at anji .... kid, there are people in here who have been posting, creating, and messing with photoshop, illustrator, etc for a long time and apparently know a hell of a lot more than you, judging from your posts / reviews.

Most of you need to grow up and learn to respect some art that is out there, aside from the usual 3D.

I could care less what somebody could say about my stuff ... as long as I like it, thats all that matters. But some of you ... damn ... you just don't know what your talking about when you review a wallpaper or skin or anything.

Admins: I say put up an service like Skinz.org did. Do not allow anyone under 13 here. Its not even worth having people like that who just can come here and rip on crap for fun.

Maybe you say to ignore it, but sometimes people can take it personal.

So I ask you ... what the fuck is digital art / art? I'm not one to judge your responses, but I'd like to know what some of you think it is. This isn't directed towards the whole community ... and I think everyone knows to whom I AM speaking to (and the ones that I am speaking to know that I am speaking to them). Do enlighten the rest of us. WHAT IS ART!?

Well, by and large, it is what gets through moderation at Wincustomize.com, and now again at skinz.org mk.2.
What makes it to the cutting-room floor is the 'I was bored so I slapped this together', and 'wow PSP7 has a really neat lens-flare'. and 'I know this sux, but my kid sister said....'....you get my drift.

The trick is to moderate, and be moderated by people with experience......who 'know' what art is/isn't, and have been involved in the art world for decades [not days]...;)

but this isn't an art site per se. i'm thinking that most ppl are looking for something that looks cool on their desktop, no matter how it's made. quit being so pretentious.

rkensin

thanks for the kind words...
i dont post much in these forums bcoz they seem like a very strange place... full of very strange people.. so i just have a good time reading what some of the loonies post..

as for what is art???
hmmmmmm
its like saying.. what is the sound of one hand clapping? does a tree falling in the forest when no- ones around...etc etc , what does Geromino yell when he parachutes from a plane?

no one knows the answer.. well not me anyway..
what possesses me to create and post work is a q i can answer though...
i enjoy creating art in PS, i sit there, listen to some tunes and play with PS till i come up with something that captures a thought or moment for me....
i post that work online (primarily devart, but here as well) coz i get a kick outta seeing it somewhere other than on my desktop. as well as that i enjoy reading all the comments i get... wether they are good or bad. the fact that i can sometimes reach someone on a different level is probably the biggest thrill i can get... i think thats what art is about... passing on a message, wether hidden or not, to another person... if you can check out something i do and have it touch u in some way.. then i have surpassed my initial expectations and intentions of upping the piece in the first place and are then content...

the 3d stuff... i really like some of it.. some of tripp's stuff really buzzes me out, and the precursor, shinter, illustrator walls are great. i tried it a few times.. but it seemed too forced, and unatural.. but thats me and my style. sorry if i missed anyone else but i aint too good with names.

ive only been using PS for 6 months (but creating art for 26years) so i owe a lot to sites like devart and custo.. i really doubt i would be coming up with
the digital stuff i do now, if i was simply doing wallpapers and stickin em on my desktop and leavin them there.

i hope that made some sort of sense

Art is like love. Nobody truely knows what it is.

DAVID, I never meant I didn't like the 3D, because I do ... it's just overused.

But, I'm really getting sick and tired of these little fucking kids who think they know everything and rip on peoples "art" because of the way it was made or because it doesnt meet the "trendy criteria". I think the people with the big mouths need to post something and then see what it's like to be ripped upon.

Peace.

if your going to put your 'art' up for critisism, you have to accept the good with the bad. and filter out the nonsense, of course.

'see what it's like to be ripped upon"? who doesn't know what that feels like? just cause it's not in this forum, doesn't mean we can't empathise. i don't need to post anything to necessitate an opinion on the works posted here.

honestly, if you're calling yourself an artist, you need to be a little more thick skinned...

i'm personally sick of ppl saying "another bryce" you're supposed to be looking at the art and beauty in it, not what program it was made with.

Well... one of the problems is that we are a community with a very low barrier to entry. If you want to review, all you have to do is sign up for an account. If you want to submit all you have to do is warez a copy of photoshop or legitimately d/l a copy of gimp and slap something together.

Even if we do start moderating wallpapers and other submissions (primarily wallpapers), the problem becomes that we can't and dont' really want to moderate comments.

Moderating submissions gets us enough flak, killing comments becomes one gigantic field of murky grey if you want to take a consistant ethical stance. People gotta learn that if they're going to upload things people are going to comment on them for better or worse. If its worse, ignore the skript kiddies who think they're hot shots, and that their "j00 sux0rz!" comments matter.

But come on people, they only have power if you let them have power.

at any rate, what is art:

Art is a medium for expression. If you have nothing to express, then you're not making art :p i think this is something that people don't seem to understand. If you're whipping pieces together, they should have some -purpose- to existance. Art is usually concidered an idealist (as opposed to existiential) field. Art is not generated with purpose following behind.

That said, art is art regardless of how it was created. People slam bryce for being easy to use, but it doesn't matter if its easy to use, its what you have to say with it. There is something to be said for complexity and fine craftsmanship but we are a diverse community of people with diverse skill levels, and it is important to remember that this is a place for people to improve and get advice.

HOWEVER that does NOT justify several things:
-Bryce wankers, are still bryce wankers. However, not all bryce users are wankers.
-Just because you can figure out where the filter menu is and were bored last Thursday evening, THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE AN ARTIST. It makes you someone who was bored last thursday with nothing to do besides play with pixels.

While fine and high art is something to aspire to, we are a community for EVERYONE from the beginners to the fogies (like JAFO! ::grins::). Again while people who are just wanking are present, there are people out there who would like to improve and are interested in the ART of digital art.

So remember! Rid yourselves of your stereotypes. Everyone who's been in the community for 2+ years is not an aloof high horsed arrogant ass, and not all the newbies are mindless skript kiddes who are just out to gain noterity so they can brag to their friends.

Art is what you make it. But you gotta make it something.

(*yawn* . . . who should i answer as . . . oh i'm bored, karl marx time)

art is an excuse to make one visible object be worth more then another. see that grey canvas? i'll pencil a square on it and sign it (insert fav modern artist name) and voila. it's price went from $30 to $30,000.

so whats digital art then? i mean, it is given out for free, so isnt higher morally?

you wish. it's an attempt raise the employability of the artist. it's simply tiny pieces of the proletariat attempting to make enough name to be accepted into the (what seems) prestigious ranks of the fine arts bourgouise ("bushwazee" for the americans in the crowd).

i dont really have many beliefs morals or standards. one of my strongest is a hatred of people who talk a lot and do nothing. noticed that yet?

art isnt a word. it's an action. if all you do is talk about it, you dont know shit.

true. art as a concept or blather isn't anything but conceptual blather. i.e., action not words. but saying art is an excuse to give wothless objects value is narrowing it a bit, don't you think? Art is as different/valuable as each individual who creates. So what's the value of the individual? Pretty high to me. Not so high to Karl Marx.; )

ekzibit says:

to summarise art as an "action" is a bit crude.
it's a process in which somethings conceptualised, be it of structural, descriptional, or emotive nature.

Now whether you decide to translate that into something practical, ie. words, images, music, is up to ones own variables. Often times that translation is a lesser variation of the original concept, be it either spinning some chat-up lines, planning the steps to your homework, or finding suitable time and passion for that next art-work.

So there's really 2 components to it, one might end up talking about "art" all their life without doing any physical (or exposable) work and still be content enough to keep out any self-doubt, or produce something worthy throughout their time, so the masses can provide praise and recognition.

But for anyone engaging in art, progression through acceptance(most of the time), availability, and just being active seems inevitable. So some sort of "action" is achieved either way.
I'm yet to submit a post here, does that mean i'm not entitled to review or comment? :I

Cheers and good nite cowboys. and girls. :)

Morning Miriku! ^_^

Words are a artistic medium in themselves. But you were making a generalization so i'll let that one slide.

selling art is very different from generating art. Market value of art is based on the state of the market at the time as well as the reputation of the artist and the scarcity of the artwork.

Miriku...and that interview comment was for an audience that didn't care...;)

Pod....The best way to handle ding-bat comments on works is to give the artist the ability to delete any comments on his work....then, the sensitive can feel better, the tough can display the crap they got, and the wanker commenters will tire of the spot of goading response.

Ist rule of controlling Grafitti...remove the first of it immediately, or else it attracts more.

If something like this were implemented, all the agro head-cases can cuss and spit at each other and show off their vitriol, while the innocents can quietly remove the nasties from their own work..[although they will have still seen them] and can sleep better at night...;)

there's something to be said for individuals who create work that expresses their feelings in a program that isn't natural to them, but in some way, they still project how they feel into thier own piece of art. and even if they've used

there is also something to be said for those people who have the skills with the programs they use and create pieces that bring attention and high ratings, but were really nothing more than a chance to make something that 'looks cool'.

true, you can produce things that are pleasing to the eye in less than 2 hours or whatever, but how much thought, dedication, emotion, and vision went into it? is it art? is custo an art gallery? even if it's not, this post is arguing about it so . . well whatever. . i just thought i'd post my thoughts.

another thought. . .if you were to look at my first submissions. . . then at my latest . . . they look as if they've improved. . .but what has improved? have i actually stepped up the level in which i produce my art? have i become more familiar with the rendering and photo-manip programs i use? OR have i merely begun to conform to what i believe people will react more favorably to? art isn't something that needs to be admired by anyone but the 'artist'. it need not be sold or even appreciated. true art should be an expression rather than something that needs to be accepted. then again. . . that statement is perhaps inherently faulty because if it were true, there wouldn't be sites like devart and custo. . . we wouldn't need to publish our pieces to gain approval if they were meant to be expressions of ourselves and our emotions.

im not going to argue anout what art is and ist, but i am going to say this: when an artist says 'comments/suggestions' it does NOT mean your opinion. say it needs a little more in the upper right corner. something like 'something a little more in the upper left corner would be nice' would be good. and dont minus points for resoultion people! its not that hard to find software that will resize the picture to your liking! i have at least 5 1600x1200 pics put down to 1280x1024, 1024x768, and some down to 800x600, all with adobe phtodeluxe! i got this free when i got my printer. that is about all i use it for. mostly i just say to myself 'okay, this thing sucks in my opinion, so i wont harp the guy about it.' and i dont. i have seen some that arn't to my liking, but i am one of the few who realize that just becuase i dont like it means that everyone else should. the same with skins, too. if something is wrong with the skin, i mainly fix it myself. on more than one of the windowblinds skins that i have, i had to change the background color so that the text would show up right. that was MY descision.

all in all, if you dont have something nice to say about a piece, dont say anything at all. these new artists want to be good and somehting like 'THIS THING SUCKS' isnt going to help them. not only is it downright mean, but the artist is confused. 'what didnt he like? was it the resolution?' then the artist might not come back, and we just lost what might have been a good one.

sorry to drift back on topic

someone asked: "it looked like it improved, but what improved?"

i got that same exact feeling some time back when i compared the first music demo i ever did with what i did semi recently.

one side, it was a lot cleaner, the samples were all tuned perfectly, it was smoother, the songs seemed more complete.
on the flipside i was slowly starting to hate what was making it feel a bit more like everyone else. the original you could never mistake for a different song. the new one. . . . well, it sounded a bit like many other people.

freaked out and wrote a 4 minute piece of entirely white noise, broken drums and voice samples saying "are we having fun yet?" :)

Three quick points for everyone to disagree with;
(1) There is no such thing as art. The concept itself cannot be defined. Art is an illusion. Media is media, and it is always subjective to each observer.
(2)The comment/ rating system of [Custo] is fantastic and shouldn't be touched. It mirrors the freedom this community values and strives for. Plus, it's funny as hell to see lamers have a chance to be lame.
(3) In defense, I almost never post any of my work at any site unless it's part of a group effort. My stuff is mine, and unique to me. Like I really care what anyone thinks anyway, I'm dead.
