you do not earn them, you are granted them. when you create your account after another users invite, you may or may not be given a specific number of gmail invites to share (currently 6).
It seems as if the more active your account, the faster you get invites. I used it to sign up for the freeipods deal, and had like 60 or 70 spam messages. I had 6 invites the next day.
