just wanted to ask any mods why my Aqua-converted icons were taken down. those icons weren't made by Apple, but by Iconfactory (http://www.iconfactory.com), as the other sets were also. they are not included in any version of OS X unless you download them from the site.
are we just taking down anything that has an 'aqua' name on it?

If you asked IconFactory, and if they then agreed that you could convert them over... then I don't think they would be a problem as long as you had permission.
But to be honest... IconFactory has their own site at: http://www.dotico.com for housing their own creations 'converted' over to Windows .ico's and XP icons. So I doubt they would ever give you permission... but if wouldn't hurt to ask ;)
dotico.com doesn't have most of their icons, and considering they made the WinXP set, i thought they'd be more enthusiastic about converting the icons themselves.
as for 'if i didn't create them, why did i upload them' sthick. first off, i never played the icons off as mine. i stated from the start that these were converted icons. secondly, i wanted to upload something that people could use and take advantage of, and some people did. uploading to custo doesn't adhere a certain fame in saying 'wow, that guy x does awesome work', i just look at the material, download it and forget.
for some reason i see a 'WinXP' set of icons that were ripped from XP, why not take those down? i put quite a bit of work into the conversions and even a simple discussion before this would've been better.
also, these icons - http://www.customize.org/details/9443 were thrown together (looks like Copland) and uploaded here. if you're going to bring up copyright and requesting authors permission, make it stick all the way around.
I totally agree, those icons should be taken down as well, they are nothing but a collection of Copland's work. And so should all the other 'conversions' and 'collections' that don't have permission from the original creator.
Basically, the way it should work is;
... if you didn't create it, don't upload it. simple. (unless you have express permission of course).
Unfortunately the area of XP icons / skins is a little more 'grey' than that... basically they are created by a large corporate company and because they are basically a 'standard' of their own, their 'conversion' / re-packaging is seen as more acceptable than if you were for example to convert and re-release scrow's, block's, Copland's or even IconFactory's icons.
There has been a steadily increasing amount of ripping, converting and downright theft been going on recently in the skinning and graphics community... whether it be websites, XP logons, airbrushings, wallpapers or icons.
Saying that, a lot of iconists are quite reasonable about conversions and remixs... assuming you ask and gain permission first. ;)
to say that one person's iconset is 'unrippable', while an iconset from a company isn't, is a very weak argument IMHO.
the funny thing is this - the guys over at Iconfactory were also the ones who designed and created the default WinXP set for Microsoft. double-standard, no? i don't buy the argument that one person/groups work is rippable while anothers is unrippable. the skinning community just made that 'rule' up to protect their work while not acknowledging others.
dave. Its right that your converted set was deleted. However I think thecusto staff should delete the other ones you meantioned. The only reason neccesary is the one the gave you. They just arent legal. The custo gang has to cover their legal ass just like everyone else. Dont take it personal man:)
Hey gang. We just discovered this site today via our logs.
We appreciate that PC users want to use our creations on Windows computers, but as stated in one of the replies here, we have an official site - Dotico.com where we post our official conversions for the Win platform.
If the set you are looking for isn't available at Dotico, its just because we have not gotten to it yet. We ask that you hang on and be patient and not post your own conversions of our work. Thanks for your help and understanding.
ok, if i can't download the icons, i'd like to convert them for my self... but i didn't even know of a application which does this until now, what's it called?
